Agreed with everyone else - Firewire I think is more of a convenience thing; it isn't any faster than PCI, and in many cases is slower.
Thats said, I have an RME Fireface, and couldn't be happier.
Damn - yeah, if Nady makes em, I don't think I'd go for them. But I wonder if the same is true for the condensers though? If so, my opinion of Nady might need to change, cause I love my Carvin condenser.
Logic is kind of a unique monster. It's not as intuitive as Fruity Loops or Garage Band, but as you use it you get used to it. I find that Logic's big strength is in its ability to handle MIDI and vitrual instruments. But it definitely isn't nearly as easy to use as what you're used to...
Reply pt. 2:
Monitors are how your vocalists hear themselves. You can try just having a loud PA and hoping it'll be OK, but frequently that doesn't work out. Remember, if your singer can't hear himself, he probably won't hit the notes. And nobody likes that.
So take a look at your budget...
I agree - when my band was gigging in high school, we bought a 2000W Carvin and it was awesome. But they've got a lot of complete systems, so see what size/price you need. Might also want to think about a powered mixer - easier to deal with, and I've heard theirs are good.
apl - why avoid...
Sort of off-topic - I've seen Rolands used in film/video editing suites. Probably not the most accurate speakers, as most film sound is done in a separate room, but apparently decent enough to use for simple monitoring.
I am also aware that this post in no way helps anything.
When I upgraded my hardware recently, I did basically this same research - Digi 002R vs RME. Now, I chose to compare the 002R to the Fireface, because I wanted the preamps. There were two deciding factors:
1. Quality of preamps - almost universally, I found that people preferred RME's preamps...
I am using my Fireface with a Lacie FW800 card. I got the card because RME specifically recommended it after their card testing - I'd go to RME's site and see what cards they recommend.
I second that - I love Carvin's stuff. I have a Carvin PA, guitar, reference monitors, power amps, mixer, headphones - the list goes on. They aren't the absolute best you can get, but they make a quality product for an almost unbeatable price.
One thing about their guitars though - if you...
Let's see:
- Carvin DC135 Electric
- HEAVILY Modified Ibanez Stagestar (currently sporting 4 switches and a button)
- Custom-Built (from parts) Les Paul copy
- Kay Truetone (circa 1967)
- Washburn D10SCE Acoustic (poor guy - he took a fall)
- Fernandes Nomad travel guitar (kickass little guy -...
Mix Magazine
This topic reminds me of an article I read in Mix Magazine last August about bass recording. It seems, as stated above, that a lot of pros are doing the direct recording thing for bass. I've included the article below.

I've never had any problems with hum from Invaders. But be aware, previous comments are correct: these are HIGH OUTPUT pickups. So if you're like me and never touch the volume knob, you probably won't be able to get a perfectly clean signal out of them. But as for hum, I've never...
