Ready To Gig. What Steps Do We Follow Now?

here's a piece I wrote on writing bios -- http://www.alandmoore.com/ramblings/WriteABio.htm And I agree, about 3 or 4 songs for a demo. I'd suggest: 1. song with your strongest hook 2. uptempo rocker 3. Ballad 4. Second best hook. But whatever. After that, hit the phones. You would not...

    Flanger sound in bass

That would be hard to say without knowing your recording setup. Are you recording to computer? If you're monitoring both the direct signal and a latent signal from the pc, it might give you a flangy sound.

    Fender Amps?

What are your thoughts on a fender champ? I was looking at getting one to use for home recording at (relatively) low volumes? I'm talking the 70's champ, the kind you can usually find for $150-$200, very low wattage.

    4 track reel to reel

Sounds like you don't need a manual as much as you need a good classic book on recording. Yes you need a mixer to work with a device like this. You'll also need a separate 2-track device of some sort to mix down to -- either another r2r machine, a cassette deck, DAT, computer, CD recorder, or...

What Keyboard would work for me the best?

I agree with warble; I've never been overly impressed with my triton's pianos or organs. The triton rack piano patch has an annoying bug, too. If you hit a staccato note and push down the damper pedal before the release fully decays, you get a loud slapback of reverb that sounds kind of like a...

    Korg M1 or X5D

Personally I'd go with the X5d, though I once got chewed out for implying (ok, I flat out said) the x5d was better than the m1. It amounts to this; they're basically the same synth, but the x5d is about 7 or 8 years newer than the M1. On the flipside, the M1 was a "flagship" synth at the time...

Legal rights of a copywrited song ?

here's a related question I have.... Suppose as part of a band I record another person's song. Said recording is never released. I then post a clip of the song on a website strictly to demo my own work relating to the recording. Am I in a bad spot?

new article: writing better vocal harmonies

Definitely! Whenever you read about theory, it's a great idea to have an instrument on hand that you're familiar with. After all, we're talking about music here, and some things just make more sense once you hear them. I mean, something like avoiding parallel fifths just seems like arbitrary...

    Feedback needed.

If it were me, I'd nix the drum machine and if anything put in some nice aux percussion, or something that's more of an obvious "drum loop" (not trying to sound real). I'd also compress the vocals a bit and add a touch of plate-type reverb. This track would sound killer with some mandolin...

Song + Album Stats Question ....

I wonder if Yes's Tales from Topographic Oceans can be considered an EP. Only 4 songs on it. Of course, it's about 80 minutes long...

    SONAR 3 SOLO not working

It's probably either a question of bleed, mixer routing, or recording with a soundblaster card whose input is set to "what you hear". Or else your Sonar install is broken. If you open a new project, drag the clip over to the new project, and play it there, do you still hear the other tracks...

    Anyone using cakewalks VST-DX wrapper?

If we're talking B3 emulators, it's worth mentioning ZR-3 and NUBI, both freeware plugs that sound decent. Depends how finicky you are. Worth a try, anyway.

How do I choose a keyboard for a beginner?

If it were me, I'd look at some of the early to mid -90's ROMplers (sample-based synths), like the Korg x5d, Roland JV series, or Yamaha SY series. You'll get some pretty good "bread and butter" sounds for the money. I think you'll be better off than if you go with the personal keyboards...

    Overdrive/distorsion effect plug-in. Any?

You got it. You just need a folder on your machine designated as your VST folder; then you tell your apps which folder it is and put the dll files in there.

    Favorite Midi Keyboard Controllers?

I've been using an old roland clavinova for a controller; the sounds are terrible, but the action is ok. Not the best, but it beats a little synth controller. Not much in the knobs/sliders department, but that kind of thing didn't really take off until the mid-90's when synth makers realized...
