In general, I use 4 tracks. Kick, Snare, 2 "overheads" which are not really overhead at all. I place these in a pseudo XY formation above the kick drum, About half way up the rack toms. One aimed toward the snare the other toward the floor tom.

Cindy, You'd be fine with an Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2 Ghz. That's what I'm using... And can very easily do 20 tracks with 5-6 plugins per track.

Hmm... odd. I had a similar problem here at work... It was with the integrated audio card and was simply that the Audio cable wasn't connected from the CD-ROM to the Motherboard... I know that's not the case here though...

This may seem like a really obvious question but... Are you sure that in the Sound settings (Under the control panel) the Edirol is set for playback?
