Would you consider buying used, or does it have to be a new preamp? A few weeks back I saw a Dan Alexander single channel pre on the 'bay for about what you're looking to spend. $500 for a used pre can probably get you something quite good - maybe an old Altec or RCA or something like that.
I absolutely love Neil Young's Like a Hurricane tone. Brian May, Angus Young and Mick Ronson are right up there, too. And for everyday rhythm playing, I think Stone Gossard nails it.
A 4050 at full price is a good deal, considering what you can do with them. $300 is even better...not quite like the $200 I paid for mine, but still... :)
Go for it, you won't regret it.
The 3035 is a different animal than the 4033, but for my money, the 4033 is an upgrade; and the 4050 is an upgrade over both. The bottle is great on some sources and not right on others - probably not an ideal first mic, but excellent to have if you already have something utilitarian.
For a grand, you can probably find something along the lines of a used Great River, Dan Alexander, Vintech, etc, etc preamp that would be light years warmer than the TL stuff (which I've used...not bad, but not in the same league as the other stuff I mentioned). If you need a channel strip, for...
Lots of options in that price range that can do the trick admirably...some that I have used and liked at $300 or below:
Rode NT1000: bright but not brittle like the nt1a, responsive, neutral mids
ADK v51: forward in the mids, slightly noisy depending on what version you get
at3035: not too...
Good questions - probably the biggest improvement you can make is upgrading your audio interface. If you're willing to go with a discontinued product, Aardvark's 24/96 audio interface can be had on ebay for about $200. It has 4 preamps - nothing too special, but they're clean and quiet, and...
It's probably something shy of heresy to disagree with Joel, but I think on a budget that you're working within, an all in one channel like the ART or Meek can be a wise investment. Because of the tonal options you can get with eq and compression - not to mention mic placement and choice - you...
I think I did this in the other thread, but can't remember and don't feel like checking:
RNC
Toft ATC-2
RCA BA-43
Altec 1589b
Peavey TMP-1
PAIA dual pre
tc m300
Rocktron 310g mono comp for fuzzed out bass
My first condensor was a gift given to me by a friend - an MCA cardioid condensor. I thought it was pretty damn amazing, since my point of reference was 58's and 57's only. My first condensor that really blew me away was a baby bottle...still one of my favorite mics.
I wish I could buy it, but don't have the money for it right now. If anyone is wavering on one of these units, I say go for it. I have one, and for this price you won't come close to finding anything comparable.
I've been wondering the same thing. Since mine will make up a good deal of the drum sound, I'll probably put them a couple of feet out front, maybe 4' off the ground. I think over the drummers head, angled downward, would probably also work well.
Your shockmounts look like mine!
Nice pics...I'm gonna start doing some mid-side on drums in my new house. Baby Bottle as the mid mic, at4050 as the side, with an Audix d6 on kick.
