    Minidisc Newbie

I also went on to MiniDisk when my DAT machine "died" with an MD8 and a Denon 1300. I still have the Denon and use it as a recorder. I have now moved on to digital multitrack recording with a Fostex MR16 HD/CD and find it a more flexible medium than MD. Most of the modern recorders interface...

Fostex MR-8 HD To Pro Tools?

I have no experience of Pro Tools, I use Audacity for PC based editing. The Fostex is a stand alone recorder that will record up to eight tracks per Song. WavManager helps to transfer the tracks as mono .WAV files to your Mac. Once in the Mac or PC you can edit each track and combine them to...

    smallest USB interface out there?

    studio monitors vs. stereo speakers

The Edirol speakers cost £147 for the pair. These days with the weak pound, I suppose that $150 would be OK. One advantage of the Edirol speakers is that they have two sets of inputs, one of which will accept the TosLink optical signal and another which will accept digital signals as well as...

Fostex MR-8 HD To Pro Tools?

The Fostex MR-8 series is based around the idea that you download your recordings to your PC/Mac. You will need USB and a bit of free software called WavManager to be found on www.fostexusa.com under "support" and "software updates". Do download the instructions .pfd file for WavManager and User...

    studio monitors vs. stereo speakers

Put simply, monitor speakers provide a flat response to the input signal. They do not "colour" the signal by making certain frequencies louder than others - at least that's the idea. Hi-fi speakers can colour the sound by making the sound "warmer" and more attractive to listen to. So called...

    E-16 getting a level...but that's about it

The Manual is available on the Fostex site. www.fostexusa.com Go to "Support" and download the manual under Product Documentation. May help your problem.

Can't take the amplifier board from cabinet

Maybe best left to the experts. But If you want to get into the back, I suggest you put oversize screws into the screwholes so that they grip only the back panel and lever up on both sides equally. If its not glued, it should give. The fit is tight to stop air movement out of the back.

    mr 16 usb

The USB link is for the transfer of files to and from the MR16. (obvious - I know) The USB treats the hard disk as another drive. You can transfer the .wav files from the 2Mix folder directly and use your PC software to burn CDs. But (more useful) you can transfer tracks directly and edit them...

    mr 16 burn problem

Too little info to help properly. Did you listen to the 2 Mix file? Was it OK? Were your recorded songs in one "Song" or did you have a "Song" for each of your songs? Did you "Finalise" your CD before trying a playback? What disks were you using? Were they -R or -RW? Have you tried to transfer...

    Fostex FR-2 External Battery Options

This is from the Users Manual so, I suggest that any stable 12v supply should do. I would doubt that a camcorder battery would have the capacity but a 12v camcorder power supply pack might. I would go with a couple of rechargable gel type batteries as used in alarms, torches etc. Radio Shack...

    Fostex MR-8HD

The 16 is better 'cos it gives you more tracks to bounce down to. For example:- If you treat 1-8 as mono, then bounce to 9/10, you can overrecord 1-8 and bounce to 11/12 etc.etc. You always need to finish your final bounce to 15/16 so you can create a stereo .wav file in the 2 Mix folder for...

    Fostex MR-8HD

A couple of points as you are still on line. Only the MK II has CF cards, all the other machines have a hard disk for storage. Also, on the same "Support" list, you will see a User Forum. Have a look, under "Digital Multi-Track Recorders" for the MR8 posts. I have the MR 16 HD/CD, a good...

    Fostex MR-8HD

Using the CF card to move tracks is one way of transferring but as you have the MR-8/HD try this route. Go to www.fostexusa.com - "Support" - "Software Updates" and download the WavManager for your computer. (also download and print off the .pfd file of instructions.) WavManager is an...

    Fostex MR16HDCD

It may help to look at the Users Forum on Fostexusa.com under "support". I have replied to a number of enquiries on that site. First I think the Manual is c**p (and I have said so) but, once you get the basics, the MR16 is a good machine. I suggest you read the manual but ignore, at this stage...

    which portable recording device

The Zoom H2 and the Yamaha AW1600 cannot really be compared. The Zoom is the handheld "point and shoot" recorder for handy recording and soundbites, easy to use and slips into the pocket!!! The AW1600 is a superb bit of serious kit designed for a home studio. In other words - chalk and cheese...

    Fostex X-12 Trouble

Fostex don't offer a service manual for the X-12 on their web site, although it may be available if you ask on the user forum. They do offer a service manual for the X-15 which may give you information to sort your problem out.

Fostex X15 "I found it in Grandmas drawers"

I have the MR16 - my second attack at digital recording.(MiniDisk was the first) The MR acts very like a 16 track tape machine and can be used as such. The extra editing options are there but can be fiddly to use. The most useful editing feature (in my view) is the "clipboard" where tracks or...

    Help with MR16 HD CD

    First try the Forum on www.fostexusa.com under "support". Now where to start??? I will refer to pages in the User Manual with () Four Inputs, 16 Tracks. You allocate the Inputs A,B,C,D to four Tracks with the Rec Select buttons (p36) i.e. A - 1, B - 3, C - 7,D - 8 or A - 2, B - 4, C&D -...
