i have been watching the price of these on ebay now and again, and i have to say, the price has really dropped on them. so much that i am gonna open mine up and mod it without fear of destroying it.
last few have gone for a little over $100. they used to be (like a year ago) hard to find for...
shit means different things to different people.
i think when you are in a room and someone is pounding away on crappy drums it sounds sort of cool cause it is so loud.
but when you record them, all you get is the cardboard, the lack of interesting overtones and so on.
so you try to turn...
yea, this one band i have recorded a few times comes in with the WORST sounding drums. but they have been "modded" in a way that they will ONLY use them, and they always say, "hey we want to sound like shit, so our drums sound like shit".
and then by the time mixdown happens they are all pissed...
i weigh in with a vote for the CADs if you need them nowish. they are pretty common.
CADs have a fun larger than life feel to them, although often i think they sound like shit on vocals for some people. personally, i dont dig the SD condenser OH sound, so i am biased.
however, for $500 if you...
AH HA!
drumagog!
that might be adding to the machineness as well... i knew i smelled computer.
now that i think about it, i gotta get me some drumagog. seems like fun. and a great way to rescue mistakes made in tracking, which... well, believe me, riddle everything i do.
i think it is the extreme indivdual drum element panning that gives strikes me as "unreal" . like that splash cymbal all the way over to the left or that tom which is all the way over to the right.
the ride actually sounds pretty real on second listen, his playing is a bit robotic though, which...
i think the higher quote is more accurate. they have been revamping their line for some time.
do a search for everything the member name "stapes" has said on tapeop. that could get you started.
i think your problem is your expectations.
with a 4 mic technique you are gonna get bleed in all the mics, and especially in the OHs.
you want the bleed.
love the bleed.
gotta say like the guitar and vocal tones, for what that is worth.
those aint real drums are they?
too bad the singer has that horrible vocal affectation- i forget its name- the collective soul "yeah" affectation.
what about the FET version? seems like they still have some of those for $199.
are they comparable... or worse.? sounds like an awesome mic.
i trust the chessrock opinion, we seem to share many values when it comes to mics..
funny, while i am not planning on bidding on it, i had it on my watch page. i was going to see if it went for super cheap.
i wont bid on it. good luck!
good point on the headroom chessrock. they aint got much.
but they have tons of footroom. when i use my earthworks sr69 on snare (my new favorite) the presonus pres are my ONLY pres that pad down enough to take the signal- which is really freakin hot. probably close to line level.
in a weird...
i have a presonus firestation.
it is not total garbage, but it aint great. i am not sure i would buy it if i could travel back in time.
however, the pres on it are passable. actually they seem to be really good IF you have a high gain mic. comparable to my symetrix sx202s for condenser duty...
i would hate to lead you astray, but i think you might also want a little rack spring for some extra texture and of course an echo chamber set-up (which is to say a nice little powered speaker, a mic and some cable).
even if the spring reverb is noisy and boinggy, and the echo chamber is not...
ok, my firestation is about to head back to presonus for some work.
meanwhile, i have one of those macs that have NO input or output, except a "speaker out" that i guess is "powered". i dunno. it freaks me out.
so i was thinking of getting a "backup" interface. something dirt cheap like the...
Re: Re: Re: Re: if you couldn't afford a SM57...
perfect analogy. if you had the choice of
1: no car, no test, no license (waiting till you can afford a nice car)
2: absolute cheapest car possible, a test, and a chance at a license
what would you do?
personally, i would pick 2. i would...
