You may need to be a registered user to download the MP3, but the hi-fi should be available to everyone.
The song is called '1000 Kisses', which is a lullaby that and I wrote, performed and recorded for my daughter. I'm not much of a singer...
I was really enjoying the introduction and the nice crisp production - then the vocals kicked in....yikes. That first line comes off horribly underpitch, it made me wince. I can hear as the song progresses that you have a good voice, but the performance isn't there yet and that first line HAS...
Not a bad effort. From a tracking and engineering perspective, I think you've done a nice job. All the parts are easy to hear and are nicely balanced. A few comments on the song:
-Try a different intro. It only really sounds derivitive of baba o'reilly when the part is soloed. Maybe do the...
Yes, Billie Joe Armstrong is a big fan of P90's. That coupled with power amp distortion makes for a huge tone. You're not going to achieve it with an amp modeler. You have to get a low wattage tube amp and crank it 'till the power tubes start to clip. That'll get you in the ballpark for...
I'm with regebro and MadAudio on the 163X. It is wonderful on bass, and even though it's not usually considered a first choice for vocals, I've used it on my vocals with excellent results. I got mine on ebay for about 30 bucks. Since it only has one slider, it really can't be considered a...
I have a V-Amp and agree with Toker41 on the clean sounds. I prefer mildly overdriven, crunch tones to balls-to-the-wall high gain and the V-Amp just sounds more natural than the POD, IMHO. I've been mic'ing my cabinets, but when a A/B them with the V-Amp, I prefer the V-Amp about 90% of the...
It's a coincidence that I was just discussing this with my band last night. I agree with Larry, and the same thing happened to me.
I am completely left handed - nothing ambidexterous about it. When I wanted to start guitar at age 13, my teacher said the same thing - "turn it over and learn...
You may also want to check out a used Echo Gina or Mia card. Guitar Center was blowing out Mia's for like $75.00 recently. Echo cards are highly regarded for their A/D converters. I have an older Gina 20 bit card and it's never given me the slightest problem.
You can get two Rane MS1b mic preamps. There is no DI - just a mic pre. But if you are looking for a clean, transparent, uncolored sound, this little preamp is highly recommended.
LP Studios are a great value, but recent Gibsons have had alarmingly bad quality issues (not just Studios, but high-end models also). Just be sure to play and inspect a few before buying. The differences between the Studio, Classic and Standard models are mostly electronics, ornamentation and...
I think you are off to a great start, Nick. When I was 15 I bought my first Les Paul with the money I made mowing lawns. I wish I had gotten into to recording back then, but there wasn't anything beyond a Tascam 8 track.
Just learn as much as you can and practice the recording techniques...
Nady's generally considered hit or miss. Quality control issues have dogged them, but if you get a good one - it's a good one. I have a TCM1050 tube mic and my friend is a Nady dealer. We opened a few boxes and we found one with a microphonic tube, but they all generally sounded the same...
I'm digging the kick drum in 'Beached', couldn't really make out the bass on my cheap computer speakers.
As far as a compressor goes, you really can't do wrong with a dbx 163x. It has one slider that gradually increases the compression. I also record bass through an ART Tube MP (upgraded...
kidvybes,
Marik - who's also on this thread - answered a lot of questions for me when I first got the mic. Apparently there were two versions of this model, older (with soldered-in tube, little different hardware and PCBs) and newer (with the socket and body is about 10mm longer). Both shared...
Hey acorec,
I have a GT33 that I'd like to try on my distorted amp. How do you set it up? Since it's a condenser, I would think and inch away from speaker (a la SM57) would be too harsh. Just curious how you mic your cabinet with the GT44.
Ditto on the GE 5 Star 6072. I put one in my Nady TCM1050 and it's a significant improvement over the stock chinese dud 12AY7. Extremely quiet, very warm tonal characteristics and relatively affordable ($35.00).

At the high end of the NOS scale ($85.00), the Mullard CV4004 is outstanding. You may want to check out this site and speak with Mike. He'll make some great recommendations at all price points:

Mike is a great guy and always very helpful. He did tell me at one point that the Mullard CV4004 is one of the best 12AX7 tube for mic preamps. At $85 bucks though it costs twice as much as an ART Tube MP! So he suggested...
I also just got the Rane MS1b last week as an upgrade from an ART Tube MP. One suggestion: Don't get rid of the ART just yet. I upgraded the tube to a NOS Tungsram 12AX7. In my current project, I recorded every track through both the Rane and the ART (the anal tweaker that I am).
The Rane...
