    Need advice on drum sets

How about MAPEX? There's a beautiful set in walnut stain finish (maple/mahogony shells) on sale at MARS right now. Looks good, the salesman hit them and they sounded OK to me. My daughter is moving up from her CB perc. set which sound good and served her well for hte last 4 years. I've got about...

    4 tracks recording

Real drums are without doubt the hardest instrument to record, too. It's even harder to record them than to mic up for a live gig. Mic placement is critical. Keep trying, listen to the drums when they're still on 3 tracks. Do they sound good and big there? How about after the bounce, do they...

    Switch them off?

To answer the original question, if you're not using the rack for more than 1/2 hour, I'd shut down and let the guests sleep in peace. Continuous on as noted above shouldn't hurt anything either, but heat and surges/brownouts can be harmful.

    Vocals Mike

Feedback could be from monitors or the mains. Do you know what system sets it off? If it's the monitors, maybe you need to turn down the stage volume and let the sound reinforcement guy bring it up for the FOH. If the FOH is triggering it, and you have any flexibility in speaker placement, try...

    live recording nightmare (long)

A lot depends on the room...if you're in a crappy room, try the condensors as drum kit overheads first. (maybe even if the room is OK). Also, since the VS can do track copy, don't waste the disk space doubling the tracks during the session. It sounds like you planned to. I'd record the board...

    Patch Bay-sics...Sanity Check

Usually OK to use TRS to connect unbalanced gear. If you have manuals, check em. Be aware that any "Insert" jack will open the circuit, so be sure if you connect inserts to the patch bay, that you use an insert (send/return) cable and normal those points.

    Opinions on Shure KSM 32

I've got a pair of 4033s a ksm32 and a tlm103 which I bought last week. Since I got it I've used the tlm103 on 3 vocalists, and I acoustic guitar. It's SWEEEEET. The KSM32 is a fine mic too, and about 400 bucks less. It also came with the shock mount in an aluminum box a pair of sony 7506s...

Ditto on the 7506s. Anyone got 7509s yet?

    Monitoring Low Ends

I'm not familiar with the .7s, but placing any speaker closer to the wall will help the bass. Failing that, see if you can get a real time analyzer and eq the snot out of them till the RTA shows flat response across the spectrum when the mic is at your listening position. It's not too hard to...

    Mic Preamp vs. Mixer

Why a mixer with a 1680? I record full bands, and with only 8 channels of record at a time, I need to submix toms to gain a record channel many times. Kick, snare top, snare bottom, 2 rack toms, floor tom 2 overheads = 8 mics. submix the toms, and gain a channel for bass, submix the 2 snare mics...

micing snare + cymbals : leakage

Dr. Underwood wins the seegar. Overheads are the main sound of the kit, fill in with the close mics. is the rule of thumb.

    Roland VS 1680?

With both FX cards, I paid 2900. The FX cards are options, but necessary by anyone's standards. 1680s are about 2100 now, and I just saw FX cards for 250ea. Check www.vsplanet.com search for 250 for the store's name. There's a dedicated 1680 forum there run by the same bbs software as this board.

    Blue Max vs. RNC compressors

I've got an ACP88 (personus) and it's good. I see people raving about the RNC everywhere lately, calling it a steal for the price. When I need another compressor I'm going to get it just to have one. According to what I've read, it's a gotta have. Never saw anyone say that about the blue max or...

    Compression confession, help me?

I assume you're tlking about multiband compressors like come in the mastering processors? There's an article by dragon linked off the main page dealing with mastering which helped me a bit. Treat them as a standard compressor with a narrow bandwidth. I've seen some which have adjustable...

    Roland VS 1680?

Hi, Junior, I own 1680, and find it's great. You are limited to 8 record tracks at a time and 16 total. To expand you buy another 1680. I found that I needed a mixer anyhow, and then just a bit of outboard gear, then some more...so in the end it comes down to the sound more than price. I think...

What FX used in my mix could cause problems in the CD master?

Regrading the "lifeless" bass, try slowing the attack and upping the ratio a bit. Could be you're attacking too fast, and compressing the attack of the bass itself. That can make it sound really artificial.
