Ambient Mic vs Close Mic + reverb

Yep, probably putting too much attention to it - You're both right. I'm reasonably happy with close mic and reverb. All my recordings have been like this thus far. Yep, I',m across the phase issues, thanks. But I do listen to CD's from fav artists, and listen to their guitar sounds, and hear a...

Ambient Mic vs Close Mic + reverb

Hi all, I'm trying for a (more) natural guitar/amp sound by using a close mic into the cone of the amp and an ambient room mic. Mixing the two does give me a slightly more natural sound but it's not really rocking my world. I haven't tried it yet, but I think from previous knowledge that I...

Demo - Sound of different Mic positions in front of an amp - Sample files

Hi all. In the quest for capturing a "good" sound, I've gone to a lot of trouble to satisfy myself about the mic'ing options of my guitar amp. It wasn't too much more effort to post the files to the forum here (since a lot of help has come from here I figured I'd help out) , so here they are...

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

As much as I tried to capture the sound I was listening to, I think I agree with you. The best results for me so far is to mic up, record, assess the sound of the guitar (Too buzzy, too middy, not enough bottom end) and adjust the amp or mic to suit. Via this method I've creeped towards...

Been there, done that. :~) A great improvement. FM

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

Three days, three guitars, two mic's, two amps and many hours of recording, testing and trying to acheive the ultimate guitar sound. Why am i not surprised that I can't achieve the sound of all of my idols with my inexpensive gear! As a home recorder, I am officially drawing the line and not...

Quick question: Sample type for mic'ing demo - reverb or not

Hi guys, I satisfied my own curiosity today by mic'ing up my amp and experimenting with mic positions; on/off axis, on/off centre etc. SM57 into a 1 x 12" open back. I also video taped the positions changes as they happened and wondered if I posted the outcome here if people would be...

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

For those interested, this was a good article on mic'ing amps. It had examples of room mic'ing as well. Guitar Amp Recording Cheers, FM

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

Yep. Awesome feedback, thank you. I'm seeing a pattern in the reply's here! As I said in my previous post, I like the sound of the amp in the room, and obviously don't like the sound of the amp direct. I have been using a Condenser room mic in conjunction with the SM57 close-mic, but I've only...

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

Ahhh, bingo. This is it. Amp is on the floor, my ears are "in the room" somewhere and the mic is right on the amp. Boy do I feel stupid :drunk: So it turns out I like the sound of my amp in the room, but don't like the sound of what it is producing directly. More room mic'ing for me then...

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

I agree for slight tonal differences - I would easily move on and accept the change. But to dial up a distorted sound and have it sound clean on tape , this is something you can't really accept. It's missing the target! (hahaha, "tape", there's an old word) FM

What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

Hi all, Just struggling with the basic fact that after you mic something up, it's just not the same during play back as it is in real life. That's what mics do - even the good ones. Specifically, I'm having trouble with guitar amps and mild distortion. I've been dialing up a clean sound in my...

The Strat's new N3 noiseless pickups - Anyone have an opinion on these?

Low budget, and for recording purposes - looking at the Tiny Terror Combo. Actually, I thought it was very flexible for the amount of gain. I think (obviously not at a huge volume) it does a cleaner clean than the Fender Blues Jr, and certainly does a dirtier dirty. The gain goes up into the...

The Strat's new N3 noiseless pickups - Anyone have an opinion on these?

Awesome feedback Mr. Cheese. Thanks for your input. Side note: Interesting you mention the Orange amp. I'm very impressed with the one I've been trying and are seriously thinking about moving over to one from my Blues Jr - just not quite enough gain for me, and very loud for studio purposes...

The Strat's new N3 noiseless pickups - Anyone have an opinion on these?

Being a home recorder, I like a lack of noise in my system. The American Deluxe Strat has N3 noiseless pups. I just listened to a rant about how they've lost the noise, but have also lost the classic Fender Tone. Just wondered if anyone here can comment.. Cheers, FM

    Fender - Radius - larger (flatter) than 9.5" ?

Not me baby. Couldn't care less about the hype-history. Hahahaha. Yep. It's funny, I changed my strings on my Jem last weekend before I recorded and it didn't take me all afternoon. Yep granted that it does take more time, but I'd be measuring the extra time taken in minutes. It's all about...

    Fender - Radius - larger (flatter) than 9.5" ?

Been there, looked for that. Hard tail not an option. I'm on the trems now... and i've been there so I know what I'm in for. Sorry, leave the tremolo-ing to the big boys (Full locking floyd rose) and block (or Spring) the strats is my preference. 9.5", yep that'll do :) Cheers, FM

Strat trem fix questions - Spings / block

Hi all/ Good news, I'm gonna buy a strat! Very exciting. Heaps of questions concerning the bridge. Will the trem stay flat to the body if I use 5 springs in the back with 11 gauge strings? Big difference between block or springs to hold the bridge flat? And the big one, will the bridge...

    Fender - Radius - larger (flatter) than 9.5" ?

Well yes, I could bu that would be a pretty extreme approach. I've had a look around and if large Fender radii were common then I'd wander in that direction. Otherwise, 9.5" feels ok. I'm sure If I owned one for a fortnight it'd feel 'normal' FM
