Thinking of buying some new mics.

Thanks! Have you got any sound samples of brass? Would it also be good on strings?

Thinking of buying some new mics.

Hi, I currently have two Oktava MK-219s (matched pair), an SM57 and an AKG D112 to record with. I'm going to be recording a new album with my band soon though and I'm considering buying some new microphones. I'm currently looking at both SDCs and ribbons. I'm going to be recording electric and...

    MS16 Calabration

I was thinking about calibrating mine myself but I decided against it in the end. The stuff you need to do it (Tentelometer, test tape, spring gauges, distortion meter, oscilloscope, function generator, level meter etc.) adds up to a ridiculous amount of money. Considering that and also that I...

    Tail Out?

Okay, I'll give tail out a go. What exactly does spool do? Does it just run the tape at play speed with the lifters up? I've always just rewound it so it ends up flapping about like crazy when it gets to the end of the reel. I'm getting the machine serviced by Clive Kavan soon so I want to make...

    Tail Out?

So why is it good for the tape to be wound before use? Is this to loosen it up or something like that? Unfortunately my deck (tascam ms16) doesn't have a spool function so it would have to be fast wound.

    Tail Out?

I've been wondering lately whether or not I should start storing my tapes tail-out. It more hassle than storing them tail-in so I was wondering if it was worth it. How pronounced is the print through and over what time scale does it occur? Thanks

Master Recorders. What to go for?

Hi, I've been thinking lately about my master recorder. I currently mixdown to a Sony RCD W100. However, I'm aware that this is a consumer deck and that I may be losing quality in recording to it. There is a noticeable difference between the sound from the CD and direct from the mixer. I'm now...

    Servicesound?

Has anyone got any experience with this guy? Servicesound, reel to reel tape recorder & valve amplifier repairs. I need my Tascam MS16 servicing and this is very close to me. Thanks

    New Quantegy Tape

He's also posted stuff for ages saying that it was going to be available and it wasn't.

    New Quantegy Tape

Is it really new though? or has he just found some in a shed or something?

    New Quantegy Tape

I just find it hard to believe that all this stuff is anything but lies. I don't believe that they're manufacturing tape or testing tape or anything like that. All their claims are completely inconsistent and the fact that the sole source of information is a very rarely updated Twitter page...

    New Quantegy Tape

So guys, is it safe to assume that the guy running the Quantegy website and Twitter page is just a massive joker or a fantasist?

    Nos revox b77!

I didn't realise that the ATR-100 was capstanless. It seems like a capstanless design might be more complicated. I assume it would need an optical encoder wheel to regulate the tape speed. It's just an idea at the moment (and a pretty far-fetched one at that) but I feel that it needs to be done...

    Nos revox b77!

It's my dream to design and build a new analogue reel to reel recorder. I'm positive that it's possible. The whole thing could be built from stock parts and a few milled transport parts. I should really get started soon. I go back to university in October. I'm sure I can find some other guys...

    Nos revox b77!

That's incredibly annoying. Again... New analogue deck!!

    Nos revox b77!

Something needs to be done about the tape recorder situation. There needs to be a newly manufactured deck.

Tape thickness ... I'm so confused!

I used to use a Fostex R8 and I always used either Quantegy 456 or RMGI SM911 tape. I tried out the thinner tape (457 or Zonal) and it didn't seem to run as well. I know that this machine is designed to run with the thin tape but it sounded better and had far fewer dropouts (which are a constant...

    Tascam MS16 Servicing

I can get the MRL for about £175 but that won't cover any of the mechanical alignment (which I think is the most important bit). The tentelometer is a fortune though so I might as well get the whole thing done for me. It's going to be a while before I can get it serviced as I have to find time...
