    Buying a New Mic!

I really recommend the Oktava MK-219. I have a matched stereo pair and they work well on practically everything. I use them for vocals, drums, organ, piano, guitar amp and loads of other things and they always produce a great sound.

    Suggestions for miking bass

I've been playing around with the sound for a while now and I've managed to get a sound I'm pleased with with only one mic. I've set the amp (Blues Deluxe) up in another room as before with the bass and middle on zero and the treble about half way up. I've then mic'ed it with a single Oktava...

    Suggestions for miking bass

I'm fairly pleased with it. I just think that maybe it could have more 'drive' or 'impact' to it.

Condenser mics for vocals on a budget

The Oktava MK219 is a great mic. I use it on pretty much anything that isn't a close miked guitar cab or drum and it always does well.

    Suggestions for miking bass

I've played around with close miking before but I've not managed to get good results. I'm going to do it again thought as it seems to be a very common method so I should be able to get a good sound out of it. This is the sound I'm getting with my current technique...

    Suggestions for miking bass

Hi, I'm currently recording a new album with my band and am trying to get the best bass sound I possibly can. I'm playing a Hofner violin bass (with flatwounds) through a Fender Blues Deluxe. I've got the bass sounding great though the amp but am having problems capturing that sound. My current...

    No audible distortion.....

I always try to get clean recordings. I record to a Tascam MS16 with DBX. I don't try to push everything into the red to get that "analogue" sound.

    What fuse for Behringer effects?

I've always thought that it's not much to worry about since the equipment has a fuse on the inlet anyway.

Sick Analog Deal of the Day

It was certainly complicated. It had the most ridiculous (and seemingly prone to breaking down) routing system ever. The R8 and 812 combo was a very good buy, I made some great recordings on it. I've upgraded to an MS16 with a studiomaster 20/16/2 desk now. The quality is noticeably better than...

Sick Analog Deal of the Day

I bought a used 688 a few years back. Worst buy in the history of the world. It turned up ridiculously late and didn't work at all. I took it to my repair man who diagnosed it with a broken capstan motor. I then had to wait about six months for a capstan motor, capstan and pinch roller to be...

What did you do with your GARAGE to make it a studio?

I've already got a 16' x 20' room for my studio so I don't need to use the garage. I'm planning on converting the garage to a bar when i get the money though. That's kind of an extension of the studio :)

    Parametric EQ build

Hi, I've just bought all the parts to build a two channel, four band parametric EQ according to this design Simple, Easy Parametric and Graphic EQ's, Plus Peaks and Notches. Has anyone had experience with this circuit? How does it sound? The parts didn't cost very much so I decided just to give...

    Tascam MS16 Capstan!

Yep, that's just how it works. A lot of machines do that. I think the idea is that there's no lag whilst it gets up to speed when you press play. It's always seemed a bit silly to me.

Mytek Stereo 96 and Sony RCD W100?

Hi, I currently mix to a Sony RCD W100 CD recorder. However, I can notice a drop in quality when listening back compared to the music coming straight off the tape. I'm thinking of buying a Mytek stereo96 converter to improve the quality. I'd run the output from the desk into the converter then...

    MS16 Calabration

Sorry, I forgot to find out where you were. I live in Hastings so he drove down and did it on site. Obviously if you live up north or outside of England it may be more of a problem!

    MS16 Calabration

He's an audio technician. He's basically THE MAN for tape recorders. He's got a website.

    MS16 Calabration

I've just had my MS16 set up by Clive Kavan. It has made a difference to the sound and I can thoroughly recommend his services to anyone who wants their machine calibrated professionally.

Thinking of buying some new mics.

so what are the advantages over the MK219s?

Thinking of buying some new mics.

I've heard this from lots of people so I'm very tempted. How does the sound differ from the MK219s? Also, is it worth getting the omni capsules? There's quite a price difference.

Thinking of buying some new mics.

It seems almost impossible to find demos of things recorded with ribbon mics online. Also, I've read that the TBone RB500 is the same mic as the Nady. Would this be a good choice? The price is very good.
