Probably gonna get myself a Christmas present. Trying to stay under $150. Thinking a soprano. Something that sounds good, is fun, and stays in tune relatively well. Any thoughts?

The firepod is a good option. There are a number of PCI/PCIe and firewire soundcard interfaces that will allow multi-channel recording. On the cheap end, the M-Audio Delta 44 or 66 are decent PCI cards. Also check out the Echo interfaces.

Although the mic capsule is rated at 162dB max SPL, it still may be possible to overload the capsule/circuitry on a very loud source. Also, on vocals, you may be getting some excess wind that is causing your "distortion." Ty a pop filter and see if it helps.

It depends on what you mean by "isolating the amp." If you just want to remove some of the room reflections from being picked up by the mic in front of the amp then, yes, they will help. If you want to decrease the overall amount of volume in the room, you really need an isolation box, as a few...

I'm sure Jon (mshilarious) could probably answer that question best, and I bet he would if you e-mailed him. My guess is that good electret omni capsules are readily available and inexpensive. Turning those into cardioid mics takes a lot more work (and cost).

Some of those have several extra layers of mesh covering the ribbon. Removing some of them will open up the top end some. Still, it will never be a bright mic.
