Good news! The free Tascam M-520 that I picked up, sans power supply or umbilical cable WORKS! all lights light up, tones work on all busses, STR Master A & B as well. I haven't put sound through it yet but it's looking good, just dirty. I don't even think I'll clean it up much after I open up...

I love patch bays. I asked the same question a while back and the answer was... it's a personal choice. I did a diagram using illustrator but I can tell you, as I've had hands on and started wiring, quite a bit has changed, but it was a good place to start. Here is the one I did:
