    E-MU 1820M Mic Pres / TFPro

People I trust tell me that those pres are pretty good, so I doubt there is a "step-up" under ~$600-$1000. That's not to say you won't find a pre under $500 you like better, but that isn't necessarily a "step-up", if you know what I mean.

    SP B1 again.

Yes, I was going to mention this if you didn't. I understand what Dan is saying, but for 2/3 of the price, it isn't exactly comparing apples to apples.

    electret vs "true" condenser

Don't know if it's a gradual change or all-at-once, but at some point they lose enough of the charge that they stop working properly. Not sure if there is a way to recharge it, but you can always replace the capsule.

    electret vs "true" condenser

The only real catch concerning electrets is that their “permanently” charged back-plate isn’t really permanent. Used to they did good to last 10 years, but nowadays, it’s more like 15-20, or so I’ve read. For this reason, I wouldn’t buy any old electrets.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

I'm betting 6 micron, but only MXL knows for sure. Thanks for the ribbon assessment. Keep us posted. :)

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

Looks like they are still selling 2003s with 3-micron capsules, so they haven't completely moved away from 797 - unless they just happen to have a lot of stock on hand. OTOH they could be buying just the capsules from 797. Hmmmmm... ask him about that too.

    Comparable to RE20?

I remember someone over at prorec.com recommending a Peavey PVM 520i as a lesser expensive alternative. I have not use the EV RE20s, but I have used the Peavey 520i and it sounds pretty darned good to me.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

I heard a few MP3 clips of that one a month or so ago that someone had posted somewhere. Sounded surprisingly good! One is definitely on my list.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

I vote for you - no telling when I'd get around to it. You'd enjoy talking to him. He's a really nice guy.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

I wonder if it still uses the same 3-micron 797 capsule or one of MXL's generic Shanghai capsules that they're putting in everything else they make? If not, then it won't sound the same. Someone will probably have to give MXL a call to know for sure (talk to Scott).

    V67g mods anyone?

Yes and here's where you get them. Give K&K a call and talk to Kevin - a great guy and very helpful!

    Expensive mic? Not necessarily necessary.

Yep, like Phil sez - probably the same capsule. The EMC8000 has a built-in head amp tho... I have a stereo "lapel" type mic that I bought for a minidisc recorder I had and it sounds great for $50. But there are drawbacks with these type of mics - mainly noise.

    Ev Pl88l

I can't remember the characteristics of this model, but if you can get any EV PL series for cheap, do it! Beats the heck out of me why they ever stopped making these.

Then get the V67 - it's the cheapest!

$20,000 mic closet (this is a classic)

Two Telefunken ELA M251s should do it. Add $2K or more and maybe you could buy one vintage version. ;)

    V67g mods anyone?

Oops! I just noticed that I posted the ratios backwards. Should be 2:1 and 7:1. :o

matched pairs help...(ADK SC-T vs. SP C-4 vs. S.E. 2A) tanx in advance!

Me too. I've tried MC012s and 603s, even modifying them with the best quality components, but but never was satisfied. I'm getting the C4s next.
