    Oktava Mics : MK-012s + MKL2500

Ok, looks like the wording was bad on my part - here's the revised version: "Well then, maybe the capsules are inconsistent because the one I tested definitely had much more low end then any of the 4 Russian capsules (all different sounding) I compared it to. Sort of approached the sound of an...

    Oktava Mics : MK-012s + MKL2500

Well then, maybe the capsules are inconsistent because the one I tested definitely had much more low end then any of the 4 Russian capsules (all different sounding) I compared it to. It wasn't brighter, just clearer sounding. Sort of approached the sound of an LDC.

    Oktava Mics : MK-012s + MKL2500

I have to disagree with him because I know first hand that this is not the case. I have modified both Russian and Chinese versions and while the circuit is basically the same, the components are entirely different. The biggest audio difference is the lack of low end you hear with the Chinese...

Recording deep male vocals: RE20 or SM7?

    Now that's what I'm talking about. ;)

Recording deep male vocals: RE20 or SM7?

Yep. Same principle applies to ribbons as well.

Recording deep male vocals: RE20 or SM7?

Keep in mind that the type of preamplifier you use will have more to do with how a dynamic mic sounds than a condenser mic. Condenser mics are active (the method of impedance conversion uses some type of built in current amplifier that runs on phantom power) whereas dynamic mics are passive...

mic modders i need help with octava 319

I second this. His modification is an incredible improvement. The before/after samples on his web site were more than enough to convince me.

    Parts for Oktava 021 mod.

That was for the MXL2001 and other look-alike mics.

    Parts for Oktava 021 mod.

The 1G resistors are $3.68 each at Mouser. (BTW, Dorsey recomends 4 per mic.) Also, it used to be difficult to order 2SK170s without a large minimum charge, but seems like someone here posted a source for oneses and twoses that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

    Upgrade from at3035 to 4050?

I would buy AT referbs in a heartbeat! They are thoroughly tested - probably more than the new ones, plus their customer service is great. I once sent them a 4050 that I had bought second hand and *thought* was defective. They couldn’t find the problem, but replaced the entire circuit and...

    AT4050s for $349

What the hell is this thing?...mic pre?...bomb?...

Looks like an attempt to convert the innards of an old style pa into a guitar preamp. That'd be my guess.

Do I Really Need a Neve Pre?...

Sorry, I just saw this. As I indicated before, I certainly trust the builder and from the pics in the previous auction and looks like he's using the same "Neve" parts, but dang, one of them went for $850! Looks like I need to get some Neve stuff and fire up the soldering iron! :D For the...

    Budget mics for Bluegrass recording

Yes, yes, yes! Been there, done that, and it works well. (Not that Harvey needs a "second", but just thought I'd chime in.) Dynamic mics can get the job done, but how well they sound seems to be more dependent on pre-amp quality, IMHO. If you want your listeners to listen to the finished...

    Oktava mods are back

Glad it went well. I think 1G ohm is plenty and can't really tell that much differenct between 1G and 2G. I never tried a silver mica in this mic but it REEKS in the Oktava 319. Waaaaay too bright. Talk about ice picks in the ears, sheesh!

    CHEEEP MXL V77 / Nady 1100

Same for the 797. The 6 micron versions (both single and dual) are in the Studio Projects "C" series, and I think Behringer used them as well. 3 micron versions are in the MXL V77, V93, 2003, and SP "B" series - the B3 being a 3 micron dual version. Another difference is that the 797s seem to...

Do I Really Need a Neve Pre?...

For the last winning bid of $610, I'd go for it. Plus, I know of rascalseven - he's pretty active at The Lab. Looks like he did a great job on this one. You can hear the Brent Averill Neve 33122A compaired to other pres here at The Listening Sessions - Session 3 so, you be the judge!

    CHEEEP MXL V77 / Nady 1100

I know the V77's capsule has a 3 micron diaphragm, but not sure about the Nady - it may be a 6 micron. Completely different capsules for sure. Any one know what ratio transformers are in these things? They’re obviously different too.

    AKG Perception 100

I've not recorded with one, but I played a gig once where the sound guy mic'd up my acoustic guitar with one. Best "live" sound I ever remember having. Since then, I've been considering getting one to use for live sound, regardless of what it sounds like in the studio.
