    SMD vs conventional electronics

Your concerns about SMD are valid. It is indeed difficult to make very small devices in some of the lower noise technologies. That does apply to capacitors especially. However, the rules of good design are the same whether it is SMD or not. If you buy a quality microphone, it should have the...

    Old TEAC mixer parts

Hi. I have an old Teac 2A mixer that I want to update with new chips. The mixing op-amps are 5558's so I know what to do there, but the preamps use a TA7136 device. I do not know what these are and can't find information on it in the web. Do any of you know what this device is, and better...

    Recommend sound fonts

Hi Y'all, I want to synthesize "band" music. Marches, suites, concertos, etc. My sound card, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, has pretty nice sound, but I would like better, more lifelike band instrumental sounds. Can anyone recommend a soundfont set that could help me out here? Thanks

    Multiple wall warts!!

I have four standard power strips powering all my stuff and I am only able to use about 2/3 of it because of the sizes of the WW. I hate them, but they are cheaper than having to build custom power supplies into all my gear. I thought USB might help because things should be powered off the USB...

    weirdest "composition habitat"........

My best song was written while I was in the Navy. I was standing at inspection in Pensacola, Florida on the runway of a closed Naval Air Base. I was trying to stand still and look nice for the inspection and thinking about my girl to take my mind off how much my feet hurt and how hot it was in...

    Vinyl records

I recently built the RIAA Preamplifier from PAIA. It was a very easy build and works extremely well. It was very low cost, I believe $29.95. Check it out at www.PAIA.COM.

analog reverbs in addition to digitals

I've got a Tascam RS-20 and RS-20B that sound really good. I only use them when I want to leave my old Fender amp in the closet. They sound about the same as my old Vibrolux.

    cheap mixer wanted

How cheap and what are you looking for? I have a Teac 2A I might let go for <$100 with the meter bridge. Are six channels enough? It is a 4 bus machine. I really like it, but I need phantom power, so I'm looking at some of the Behringers. I have a few more pennies too, so the added cost...

    "Band" music

Thanks y'all. I know what you mean about the brain wave interpreter, but mine is really on the fritz. I even have to pilot my truck to work. What bummer. If you know how to tune up one of those, let me know. I tried my Korg tuner, but it didn't work. Thanks for the Sousa.com, that may be...

    "Band" music

Not exactly songwriting in the traditional sense, but does anyone on this forum write music for band like high school marching band, etc.? I used to do it 30 years ago and I am wondering if things have changed in the scoring of the music. If you have experience at this, please respond. Or if...

Looking for a descent 1U rack Reverb unit for vocal tracks.

I have a Teac RS-20 and 20B I'd let go pretty cheap. They are 2U rack mounts I bought off ebay and never even tested. I'd be glad to test them and make sure they work if you're interested. I doubt I'm ever actually going to use them.

Building a computer mic preamp & needing help

I agree Havoc, I agree. I have used these many times for negative voltages and for their design rating they are great. I don't know about using them for 48v ranges, but National or Linear Tech probably have an application note that will handle it. I'd definately recommend them, thanks.

Building a computer mic preamp & needing help

Andrew, I don't know how much voltage they actually get out of these things. I've used that cascade voltage multiplier a number of times to generate really large voltages like a kilovolt or so, but I admit I haven't built this up. I'm not in a building mode right now, but if you ge time...

Are there any electronics builders out there?

Thanks for the info Ethan. I saw that a lot of people read it but you're the only one to reply. This has happened to me a good bit here. I'm getting a complex, is it my breath? Oh yeah, no breath in cyberspace. Sorry. Only kidding. I've been building other electronics for years and have...

Are there any electronics builders out there?

Are there any electronics builders out there? If so, tell us about your experiences, good and bad, tips, tricks, etc. Also, have any of you used PAIA stuff? Do you know of any other worthy kits?

    Preamps in Tascam 414

I have been recording on my Tascam 414 with both my guitars and my mikes using the preamps in the Tascam 414. I don't know that I am unhappy with it, but I am interested in anyone's opinions of the preamps built into this recorder. My only complaint is that they seem to be somewhat "shrill"...

For all you old farts (born before 1967)

Born in 1949 You all are really making me feel old. My first recording was a mono Wollensak and a mono Sear reel-reel recorders with built-in mikes. I did sound-with-sound by sitting them close together and playing one back while I sang/played so that the other would record both. Needless to...

Building a computer mic preamp & needing help

I looked into that as well. I'm an electrical engineer but more importantly, I'm a build-it geek. Look at the way PAIA biases their tube circuits. They have schematics on their website, www.paia.com They use a simple oscillator driving a multiplier to get the appropriate voltage. It...
