C'mon...
Question; >I'm a rookie to miking drums. Can someone explain how phasing works and how I can best set things up to deal with it?<
A; >Yeah, ditch the AKG C1000's and use thesehttp://www.8thstreet.com/Product.as...ory=Microphones for overheads. No, really, I'm serious.<
Michael, how...
Makes sense to me, although you are probably corner loading like a Motherf****r.
I talk to guys all the time that ask me questions about far mic'ing, my usual stumper question to them is; "Well, does your room sound good?" If the answer is no/kinda/maybe...don't mic it. I don't care what...
Mike Tholen is the man for this question. He usually hangs out at George Massenburg's bbs.

Oh I Wish!
I get a discount on current product, that is the main reason I work here. I occassionally get discounts on older stuff, like my 165a's. But I have never seen 160 VU's come through here. We can't get parts for 'em, so we can't repair 'em. They have to be repaired by third party...
You suck. I am very jealous.:D

A single 160VU usually goes for about $800 U.S. A pair for $450 U.S. is a great deal.

Try your pad (this will probably fix it), try a different mic (are the mics you have dynamics?), try the mics direct (w/o the pre). If the distortion is still present w/o the pre, then it's not the pre. If the distortion is not present, there may be something wrong with the pre. If there is...

I'm the guy who posted that GC has (had?) them for $29.99. I bought the last two that my area GC had, one was a display, that had the $79.99 price still on it. They both rang up @ $29.99. Of course I had to listen to the "pro audio" sales weasel go on and on about his favorite...
Somebody on one of the bbs's (might've been this one) mentioned that the early SolidTubes had some PSU problems. Bad ground, noisy, or some such, that was fixed in later models. I've got one of the later ones so I've never heard what the problem sounds like. Maybe hissy, and spitty? :D
Tom...
It's definitely not a mic for all seasons. On some voices it really works, on others it really doesn't. Bear, I wouldn't call it hissy or spitty, I bet there was something very wrong with the one you heard.

How low can you go?
I just talked to my local GC. The price on the ECM8000's has dropped even further, they are now $29.99. I'm picking up their last two this afternoon.
Oh yeah, MARS is closing 8 stores including the one here in SLC...Times is rough all over.

>I think I saw something about a 160S. Is that correct and if so, what is the difference between a 160S and a 160SL.<
The 160sl is the later version with AutoVelocity, otherwise they are identical.

Hey Wide Awake (or anyone else),
If you had your choice between the Joe Meek 2 channel optical whatsit and your Pro VLA, which would you choose? Or, comparisons between the two if you have any. I met someone online who wants to trade some stuff and he has 1 of each that he is...

I've been digging the Audio Logic MT66 on snare lately. Sounds like no other compressor I've ever heard, far from transparent. Good luck trying to find one. I've also been digging the dbx 119 and 165a lately, both very aggressive. I've also been trying out an old Urei comp thing...

Are we talking about EQ during tracking or mixing? I'm talking about both. I will often Lo and Hi pass vocals during the tracking stage, but rarely boost any freq's. During mixing there are no rules, it fully depends on the track.
I am fully with Harvey on getting it right the first time...
Hmmmm...
I've heard many tracks/mixes from the folks who "don't use EQ."
They need to use EQ.

The Blue Series has been out for a few years now and is quite wonderful. The 160SL Stereo Compressor, and the 786 Stereo Pre-amp are part of the Blue Series. The Silver Series hybrid tube units have also been out for a few years now as well. The 586 is a stereo pre-amp, the...
Votec...NoTec...MaybeTec.
The Votec is a noisy little thing. Most guys that use them use them live, not in the studio. That said, I know that The FLYS, and NIN have used them in the studio. Plugging a $10,000 mic into a $150 MFX processor in the studio is deliciously perverse sometimes. I...
