Hi. I have one and I didn't think it was very difficult to get the basic recordings down. However there are alot of features that aren't quite intuitive. There is a great user board at http://forum.dijonstock.com/ that can get you through the rough spots.
PS The pres aren't so great...
As already mentioned I think you'll get a lot of miles out of a couple of small condensers (overheads/acoustic guitars) and an SM7 or RE20 (vocals/kick).
I think the consensus around these parts is that the 603s are better on acoustic guitar than as drum overheads. I think the SP C4 package is a pretty attractive one.
