    Pancake

I own a Teac 80-8 that needs some new SM911 tape. Are there any videos on the web showing how to spool some pancake onto reels of an eight track?

Thanks for the link but I still cant see where the input signal is shown. Looks like there isnt one.

    Dbx 266xl

Does anyone know how you can guage how much signal is going into a DBX 266XL? On other comps I have there are input meters so you can see if youre overloading it or the signal is too low. Thanks.

    Tascam 38

Does anyone know much about the Tascam 38? I already own a Teac 80-8 and know someone who wants rid of a 38 and I want to know if theres much of a difference between the two machines. Thanks.

    Pro tools Recording studio

I have a chance to buy a Pro Tools Recording Studio for a good price. I have tons of analogue half inch tape that I want to convert to digital, and this seems a good chance to do something about it. What else would I need to buy if I got it?

    Using limiters on drums

Most of the top studios seem to use really expensive outboard to cut great sounding drums, I just thought thats what youre supposed to do to try and emulate the best engineers around. Its peaks I suppose I want to avoid, just like the best outboard seems to do, maybe a levelling of everything on...

    Using limiters on drums

I dont think its possible to compress while mixing since the whole kit will be on just two tracks of the tape. Everything panned to suit. Its getting recorded on an analogue eight track.

    Using limiters on drums

I own a few cheap Behringer compressors that I plan on using to track drums during the recording of my bands demo. I have tried several times to get anything decent sounding, when tracking the toms and snare. Poor results. Is it better to limit these instead of trying to compress them? I assume...

    Recording "hot".

I have a Teac 80-8, that I want to use to tape my band. I was wondering about outboard compressors, but have recently read about recording signals to tape, "hot". Can I use this method for everything? We are drums, bass, guitars, vocals doing the heavy rock stuff. What isnt advisable to tape "hot"?

    How to limit toms?

I would just like to make sure our drummers hits on the toms are all pretty consistent, with no peaks that jump out of the speakers when the tape is played back.

    How to limit toms?

Just the ratio knob? So it doesnt matter what the threshold, attack, release, etc..are set to?

    How to limit toms?

I cant see how I can limit the toms after its all on tape. I intend to record the drums on two adjacent tracks, with everything panned to suit.

    How to limit toms?

I aint using a computer, but a reel to reel 8 track and a mixer.

    How to limit toms?

I was wondering if its possible to set the controls of a compressor to act as a limiter while tracking drums? I have only the one stereo compressor to use on three toms of the drumkit. Is it possible to patch it into the aux inputs of the mixer, rather than use the insert points? How would I...

    Panning drums and guitars

Where would you pan the guitars in a mix, if toms are panned to 10 o clock and two o clock?

    Gain staging.

I would like some advice on gain staging please. I have a Teac 80-8 that I want to use to record our bands demo. So as regards getting the best possible, quietest signal onto tape, is it best to set all the input volumes to 6 or maybe 7? Then adjust everything else, the mixer etc.. to suit? Any...
