Calling all you 16-trackers with 8 buss mixers...

oh yeah, i should clarify that ergonomics still trump the minor sonic advantages of skipping the busses! Particularly if it means the difference between capturing a 'strike while the iron is hot' take or a 'take 5 while i futz around with the patchbay' take.

Calling all you 16-trackers with 8 buss mixers...

I use the direct outs way more often than the busses on my m520. One less gain stage. The improvement is audible. Of course some gain stages can be desirable (the brightening effect of an 1176 comp with GR off for example) but that's another topic.

    Tac Scorpion help please

Hey Ken, I believe Colin at Audio Maintenance in England is a Tac specialist. http://www.audiomaintenance.com/home.htm He might know the problem and have the spare parts needed for a DIY fix.

    "Recording the Beatles book"

I agree 100%! It's a masterpiece. The depth of research is amazing and the photos are just incredible. Apart from Recording the Beatles my other fav books related to sound recording are: The Audio Cyclopedia by Howard M Tremaine Practical Techniques for the Recording Engineer by Sherman Keene...

    Tascam M520 - noisy channel on/off switches.

Thanks for the intrepid investigative work Cory!! RE the assign switches, I did try them at times and I think they may be quieter. The only catch is the fact that I have to click two at a time (unless, of course, I use my Ampex AG 350 for a mono mix). I'm going to try giving those switches a...

    Tascam M520 - noisy channel on/off switches.

I think you're right... And it's too bad... when I've had the chance to see people mix with, say an MCI, they would often use the channel mutes. That said, aside from this channel switching noise and the sound of the EQ, I still love this board.

    Tascam M520 - noisy channel on/off switches.

Unfortunately, yes. I can never seem to get them clean enough to stay quiet. I even keep the board under a dust cover when not in use..

    Tascam M520 - noisy channel on/off switches.

Hi, I haven't been around in a while. I hope you're all well. I just have a quick question: Does anyone have a solution for the noise that comes from the channel on-off switches in a M520/512 console? I'd like to use them like mutes during some mixes but they develop crackles quite easily...

    Analog Tape Industry Research Project

I'd check out this book, referenced in this Ampex List post by MRL's Jay McKnight: "Hello Ampexians, I just noticed that there is a new (2008) business book about Ampex: "Winner Take All: How Competitiveness Shapes the Fate of Nations" (Hardcover) by Richard Elkus. A one-time Ampex manager...

    3M M-23 mix deck...

Oh that's interesting. BTW do you know if he ever mixes to more ancient 2-track on his studio's list (like the 3M Mincom M-64 or the Studer B62)? I'm trying to restore a full-track Ampex AG-350 right now (bias circuit is givin' me sass), I'm really hoping to put it to daily use for slapback and...

    3M M-23 mix deck...

It seems that the fidelitorium isn't hurting for tape classic machines: (^from their web site) Have you read the 'Recording the Beatles' book? There's some great stuff on the M23 8 track in there. Like the fact that EMI had to install an additional bank of 8 cards so they could simultaneously...

    3M M-23 mix deck...

Wow Otto, that's truly a thing of beauty! Why the 'bias' and 'erase' settings on the meter select? Do you set the erase bias and record bias separately?

    Issues with ATR tape?

Hi Otto, I haven't tried RMGI's 911 or 468 yet nor any Zonal tapes. I got a couple NOS reels of EMTEC sm911 I haven't had a chance to try them yet. I did try some EMTEC sm468 and I loved it--beautiful slitting and shed free.

    Issues with ATR tape?

I'm a huge fan of Mitch Easter's band Let's Active and his production work. "the magic city" by Helium is one of my fav LPs from the 90s, and it pretty much goes without saying that REMs Murmur and Reckoning were masterfully produced (aside: i'd argue that without Easter and Don Dixon the seams...
