    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Here's my band's new e.p.: Freelove Fenner // Pineapple Hair e.p. We recorded to 1" 8-track (Otari MX-70; Quantegy 456 stock) and mixed to 1/4" 2-track (Studer B67-mkII; 3m 996 stock). No digital effects were used. Our friend mastered it using the Thermionic Culture Phoenix as the primary bus...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Hey lonewhitefly, I really dig that Jeff Moss tune! It's got a really cool Van Dyke Parks-y thing going on--very interesting place to take that song. This is our most recent thing: yvynyl (sorry I can't find the original soundcloud link for some reason) It has some not-so-subtle tape flanging.

    Otari Mx5050 Relay Info

Great tip Tim! I've been having some issues with my MX5050 just recently--sounds like the relays may be partly to blame.

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

If you search the tapeop messageboard (and a number of other message boards for that matter) you'll see a fair bit of discussion on this. Consensus: 'normal' professional recording tape like 456/457 or sm911 performs poorly in this application (tends to get jammed and wears out quickly). 8-track...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

Yep, the previous owner A/B'd the 8-track tape (like from that Crystal Gayle/James Last/Boz Scaggs cart you found in a flea market) and a supposedly specifically for space echoes loop he ordered online--8-track won. I'd read elsewhere that Roland actually used broadcast/NAB cart tape but the...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

Hey glad to hear you found the answer. I just got an R201 myself in a trade--amazing machine, I'm still getting familiar with the different 'modes' ("7" is my fav so far). Little tip from the previous owner (a savvy technician): when the loop wears out, tape from an old 8-track cartridge makes...

Which tape for 600 series ampex decks?

Hey, thanks for the kind words! Yep that's my band. RE using 1mil tape. I did try 3M scotch 177 on my 602 and it seemed to work OK. I'm not sure if my machine was typical, but it had rather feeble amount of takeup tension. I would have figured 1mil tape would help with that but it didn't. And I...

Which tape for 600 series ampex decks?

I had good luck with Ampex/Quantegy 632 tape when I had an Ampex 602 deck (yeah I regret selling it).

Hi, Do you have a copy of the service manual? I noticed it available for download here: http://www.echofix.com/files/101_201_service_manual.pdf

Building a new patchbay, need a little advice on cabling

+1000 I also agree that the cable isn't worth worrying about so much. The quality of your soldering and the care you put into planning the wire runs will probably mean a lot more in the end. I was in the same boat last month, upgrading from RCA to TT bays (at the same time, I upgraded to a pair...

    Need new turntable cartridge: Opinions?

I really like the Shure M97xE. As a bonus, you can probably find replacement styluses fairly easily in a local shop.

Call For Opinions: Otari MX-70 16trk vs. Tascam MS16

hey I use both the 8-track version of the MX70 and an MS16 as my two main machines. I find that the MX70 has a much better transport. On the other hand, my MX70 presented with a couple pricey-to-resolve but very common issues: bad relays and noisy custom FET pack ICs. I don't like using dbx...

    Tascam 388 Story...

hey thanks cory. Something must be out of whack with mine as it sound like someone draped a wool blanket over speakers with dbx engaged. I'll try to do some testing with pink noise and a spectrum analyzer to try to get a better feel for what's happening. As an aside: I love this 388. It's an...

    Tascam 388 Story...

hey Cory what an odyssey of a thread! So glad to hear everything worked out in the end. I acquired a nice 388 myself a few months ago and I love it. Did you by any chance do any frequency response testing with dbx engaged? On my 388 the frequency response is well within spec with dbx bypassed...

    Otari MX-70 Restoration 8-track 1" (with Pics)

Re the lifters. I'm at work right now, but I seem to recall that you can access the lifters quite easily if you open up the VU meter panel. There are a couple hex screw to loosen which will allow you to rotate the lifters a bit to give them a fresh surface then re-tighten.

    Otari MX-70 Restoration 8-track 1" (with Pics)

Hey, I have an MX-70 too, congrats on the finding this one for such a great price. I'd highly recommend getting the Athan pinch roller if you've got room in your budget: Department Also, if you wanted to save a bit more money, you might be able to get away with leaving RL-3 alone and just...

    M-520 Mix insert work-around

Hi Jeff, I thought about doing that, and experimented with a few things but I opted to use two busses to feed the 2 track. It's more flexible IMO if you don't mind re-patching. I currently have the stereo master A going to a set of powered monitors and the stereo master B going to both a...

    M-520 Mix insert work-around

Hi Jeff, I've always assumed that the Stereo Master A and Stereo Master B were intended to be used as monitor feeds, are you sending one of them to your 2-track? I always use two of the eight busses for my mixes and insert effect as you mentioned. My neighbour also had an M520 and his came with...

Will Quantegy 407 tape strech on my MX-70?

Hey thanks for the sage advice folks. I'll proceed with caution. If I'm not able readjust the tension to a happier medium before I have to use a reel, I'll be sure to avoid stopping from the fast wind modes (the library wind seems considerably gentler).

Will Quantegy 407 tape strech on my MX-70?

Hi all, I hope everyone is well. Looks like some exciting stuff has been happening around these parts. Anyhow, I got a box of NOS 1998-vintage Ampex 407 1mil 1" tape and I was wondering if I should be worried about using it with my Otari MX 70? Would stretching be a concern? (The machine's...
