Hey thanks for the kind words. RE the drums, I'm sorta forced into a drum booth era thing due to low ceilings, but I do happen to prefer deader drums most of the time. Wow amazing vids! That home telecine of yours works great too IMO. I don't see any parallax distortion. Are you shooting the...

Haha I concur. The synth stack sounds great on your upload! I really loved the dry drum sound and the backward cymbal wash too. Good luck with the new record! My band used a bit of backwards cymbal on this song, which we just made a super 8 vid for: "Sad Emporia" by Freelove Fenner on Vimeo...

    Tascam 58-OB Story...

Hi Jonk, It's been a while since I've had to do this, and the procedure is curiously absent from the service manual (unless I'm missing pages).. but I seem to remember needing to remove a significant section of the front panel plus the pinch roller and the covering for the head-stack in order to...

Thanks guys! And yep JP is right about the globe. And that M-VS1 patch of yours does indeed sound very cool as a bass synth. Interestingly, the archived Sound-on-Sound review mentioned the EMU Proteus as its primary market competitor. I had that one for a while and really didn't like it.

That was great JP! I like the fast cuts between tape machines. The tones were excellent as always. Just out of curiosity, what instrument was on track 4? Looks like it was hitting the tape hard (but appropriately so). The is my band's newest super 8 vid:

EMT 240 Gold Foil Plate Reverb

Wow congrats Miroslav. That's one of the most coveted pieces of outboard gear ever made. I've heard nothing but good things about these. Best of luck with getting it up to spec. PS I'd also love to see some pics.

    Teac 8516 / 1" tension woes

That's great to hear. Interesting idea about the mod. I always wondered how feasible it would be to have a dedicated sync head output patch point in conjunction with a few externally powered cards. That way you could do ADT and flanging more easily (no need to bounce off repro with the tape...

I kinda like the relaxed tempo Jason, the drum feel is great and I wonder if you'd lose something in the speedup? (But then again I always seem to prefer vari-sped version of anything when I A-B it!). My band did another super 8 vid a few months ago. Inspired by a nutty NY Times archive article...

    Teac 8516 / 1" tension woes

Did you end up getting this fully sorted? If it's of any help, I could scan the MS-16 tape path adjustment service manual page. BTW love the Slugbug stuff!

Hey thanks Mark. I'd never actually heard The Go-Betweens before. I used to work with an Australian who loved 'em, so I always meant to. I listened to a few tracks on Youtube, it sounds great. I really like their guitars and arrangements--unusually minimalist for that era.

Hey JP, I've been really enjoying your album. At times it reminds me of ELO's (IMO criminally underrated) "Time" LP with its lush synths and escapist lyrics. My band just finished another super 8 vid. This time we tried doing a multi-part thing that spans a couple songs (with a tape piece...

Hey thanks Guys. Hey Allen, first off: that ms16 track sounds sweet. really nice arrangement too. RE the super 8, there are actually quite a few labs still in business. I used a place in Toronto called Niagara Custom Lab. Since I used so little film, I splashed out a bit and paid for a...

Excellent!! I'm downloading now. I have a bit of a bonkers week so it might be a few days before I can report back on my impressions. Thanks again for the kind words. Yeah I love that Slugbug stuff too. I only discovered him because of a very funny Farfisa organ technical video he posted on...

That's was very cool. Almost like Eno-meets-Wreckless Eric or something. I had definitely read about BeBop Deluxe before, I'll have to explore his discography. How goes the mixing JP?

Thanks JP. And RE this: Great news! I'll have to check out Bill Nelson. I was hearing Sparks and Devo a bit in it myself. Pretty fun stuff, I hope the guy's record does well.

Oh hey thanks. Yep it's Tri-X. Do you have any of your stuff up on youtube/vimeo to show us? And thanks for the kind words RE the music. The album is streaming here now: Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner | Fixture Records On a different note, there's a guy in Texas who I discovered randomly through...

Hey thanks guys. Yep, we did edit on a computer (I'm sure it would be fun to edit with the splicer but we just don't have the know-how). For about half the footage, I just videotaped the projected film off the wall (I wouldn't recommend this is you can afford a pro transfer). For the other...

I'm a big believer in this one too. A while back I came across the writings of a Dutch computer scientist named Edsger W. Dijkstra; something he wrote that I thought was striking (tho in a very different context) was: "The tools we use have a profound (and devious!) influence on our thinking...

Thanks so much JP! I was reading up a little bit more on the MSR-24. I didn't realize it could do 7.5ips (with respectable specs too). I love using the In My Life/Rubber Bullets (10CC) trick of recording overdubs at 1/2 speed. I wish the MS16 did 7.5ips (though I very much appreciate its...
