I need a new headphone distribution amp. Recommendations?

Hi Cory, I'm happy with my ART HeadAmp6: http://artproaudio.com/downloads/owners_manuals/om_headamp6.pdf It lets you fold to mono and mute one ear (handy for some singers). It also has a stereo aux in (unbalanced only unfortunately) for each channel and a blend control (more-me). It also has...

    The First "Porta"-Studio?

Very interesting design on that thing. And very nice metalwork. I wonder if the transport/headstack is maybe taken from a 70s Sony dual capstan model? Someone with a lot of familiarity with 70s decks might recognize the hardware.

Claim that 641/642 similar to 406/407

John Klett's archive has the tech specs for both: http://www.technicalaudio.com/pdf/Quantegy_tape/Quantegy_600series.pdf http://www.technicalaudio.com/pdf/Quantegy_tape/Quantegy_406_407.pdf Not sure how similar the chemistry is but the oxide coating thickness is very different (7.9µm for 632 vs...

Tascam 388 Rec Play Amp PCB troubleshooting

For the record it ended up being one of the 220uf electrolytics. The problem was devious and tricky to troubleshoot because there was also a few cold solder joints on the mother PCB. The moral of the story: Insist on proper packing (see this thread) if you buy one online.

    Tascam MS16 tape noise

I agree that's a really good thing to try--I do this all the time with my Otari MX5050. I didn't realize there was enough space on MS16's the reel table.

Tascam 388 Rec Play Amp PCB troubleshooting

Hi all, I'm just looking at somebody else's 388 right now and I got most of the bugs worked out (it was a sick puppy) but unfortunately there's a tricky no-repro issue (input is OK) that follows cards. I got the person to order a couple spare cards off of ebay but one of those too has a repro...

    Tascam MS16 tape noise

Hi Chip, That looks to be tape rubbing up against the reel flange. This is sometimes caused by a reel that's slightly bent. Other times the reel itself is perfectly true but the reel table is adjusted too low or too high (or adjusted for a different brand of takeup reel--the flange thicknesses...

    Tascam MS16 problem

Have you tried to change the relay K2 on any of these cards? That'd be my first course of action. Do spare cards from you parts machine work ok in these channels? Just out of curiosity, did you do a comparison between a modded channel with a stock one?

    Tascam 58 or Otari MX-5050-8?

As a slight tangent, any Revox C278 owners around? I always wondered how it compared. Looks well-made: Reparatur Bandmaschine: Studer Revox - C278

    Tascam 58 or Otari MX-5050-8?

The individually selectable sel-rep and repro output is a nice Otari feature if you're into tape effects like ADT or flanging. Also, the Otari's built-in oscillator is very handy in some situations (you can do a record alignment without patching into a console oscillator). OTOH Otari MX5050...

    Son Of Tascam 58 Story...

Hey Cory, nice find! Did you deal with solenoid issues with the other 58? My friends have a hurtin' unit 58 that seems to have stuck lifter solenoids. Just curious if it's easy to fix. (This machine has some PCB cracks from a previous owner dropping it so there are bigger fish to fry, but it...

Tascam 388 calibrated to Quantegy 407 question

Before tweaking the bias voltage (you need to own a wide bandwidth AC Voltmeter for this), I'd recommend just doing a test. The bias should be very close to ideal. Try recording a sine sweep from 30Hz to 16kHz (the free mac/pc program Audacity will let you create this sweep tone) at -10dB on...

Tascam MS-16 EQ caps on Rec Board

My friends' MS-16 seems to have the identical issue on one card. I was over with my MRL last weekend. I was able to get flat repro and synch response on the card for 1kHz, 10kHz and 16kHz but 100Hz was non-existent. The issue followed the card in their case too. I'll be sure to let you know if...

    Fostex 4030/4035 sync question

Hi all, I'm slightly confused by the documentation on the Fostex 4030/4035 combo. I was wondering anyone familiar with these units knows if an interface unit is absolutely necessary for the Master deck to achieve basic synchronization? I could see that it would be necessary if you were...

Otari MX70 on eBay - heads up

The IC driver issues are a real pain so glad to hear yours are all the newer ones. I had a couple channels with the I-0050s when I first got mine and they would generate this horrible crackling sound on occasion (and somehow IIRC, it was recorded on the tape). It was a lot like bad splices done...

Tascam 388 calibrated to Quantegy 407 question

I think they should be quite close. Here's Q407's specs: Coercivity: 330 Oe Oxide coating 10.1µm Retentivity: 1300 Gs LPR35 Coercivity: 320 Oe Oxide coating: 11µm Retentivity: 1660 Gs I'd think the bias would be pretty much a wash with 407's slightly higher coercivity and lpr35's slightly...

Otari MX70 on eBay - heads up

Hey thanks! Actually they did the vast majority of the tracking and mixing at their own spot on an MS-16. They're also a great live band, highly recommend checking them out if you have a chance. They're also really nice people. They share one band member with Lantern (from Philadelphia, where I...

Otari MX70 on eBay - heads up

Yup the border will be a real hassle. Very good idea about the non-working/salvage invoice. I'll almost surely need to pay Canadian taxes on the way back in. The Otari has the first revision I-0050 driver ICs which are prone (practically guaranteed) to fail. I think I'm going to need to change...
