You should use a headphone and a drummer (a monkey might do aswell). Solo your snare on your mixing board, make your drummer slap the snare (tak, tak, tak, ...) and place the mike where it sounds best. Mostly that's above the rim, 1 inch higher, pointed at the middle of your snare. Do exactly...

On a balanced signal, you've got a + which is positive relativly to the ground, the - is 90° phase flipped relativly to the +, so your - is negative relativly to the ground. On an unbalanced signal, there's only a +, positive relativly to the ground. (at least that's what I understand about it)...

Also, don't forget that it's better (in my opinion, and lots of others) to eq/compress/... your bass in the total mix, rather than solo'ing it. You'd be suprised if you hear some basslines solo'ed from some fine mixed albums. -greetz

Main outputs or bus outputs are mostly balaIanced, so you can use TRS. If your using your inserts, you won't need TRS but TS, as they mostly are unbalanced outputs. I think it's not a bad Idea, though I personally choose to use my aux on my mixer for monitoring. btw, headphone monitoring is not...

The built in soundcards are moastly crappy and there mic preamps are specially designed for computer mics and are even crappyer. You should best go with an usb or firewire "soundcard". (http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/cat--Audio-Interfaces--2418) as you can't install a pci card in a laptop...
