    mic pre amp?

I have literally no experience with the mixer that you have, but my guess is that an outboard pre-amp would be better. I like to think of pre-amps as the "sparkle" of a recording. I haven't found that "budget" pre-amps give a night and day difference in terms of the quality of recording...but...

    Who has this?

I used to have a Rode NT-1, and I really didn't like it at all. I'm after a more mellow tone (I love the sound of the Beatles Revolver album), and this mic is super-bright. Bright enough where I could swear that I could hear distortion on the high end at times. If bright is what you are...

Recording to laptop from mixer board

I have one of these: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/700714/ and use it with pretty good results. It's just as good as the digital converters on my ADAT (which, by reputation, are not supposed to be great)...I can't really hear a difference between the two. To...

    AMS or ZZSounds....

yeah, AMS is cool. But you had better know what you are buying, and don't rely on their phone rep's to give you any information that is not on their web site.... But that's to be expected from a discount mail order place, really....

    The recursive question

Sorry, I really don't have too much more useful advice for you...I haven't had that much gear. Based on what I've read around here, either choice will be something that you will use for a while after you upgrade other stuff. good luck!

    Seems like an anal question

Yes, yes. Much wisdom in the post above. You don't know if your stuff is sounding good or not if you can't hear it. This was something that I undervalued until I got a good set of cans....

    Guitar Clarity

With the list of equipment here, I would have thought that any complaint would be in the "harsh" category, not the "mud" category. A strat and a tele? Yikes, add in a china cymbal, and say good bye to your high frequency hearing.... Kidding. I was in a band where we had a bass player, guitar...

The quest for tone: Overdubbing Guitar+Effects

For some reason, I thought that SM used a chorus, then distortion pedal (or the other way around). There is a light flanging sort of sound on that album, I think, and it's the chorus that produces that. I think that I read this somewhere....? I'm an acoustic guy, so I'm hardly focused on...

    The recursive question

This kind of things comes up all the time, and it's tough to answer. I record to ADAT now, but I used to have the original Boss BR8, which wrote to zip disks. I'd imagine that's somewhere in the ballpark of your Fostex thing. I upgraded from Behringer board pre's to a blue tube, and at the...

    This forum sucks

We are obsessed with (1) buying new stuff because it's fun, while (2) having any sort of justification that spending huge amounts of money is the "smart" thing to do. Or something like that....

    budget acoustic mics

I've never owned the Marshall or the other mic's that people recommend. But I like the Octava MC012 for acoustic. I find that it has a unique "woody" sound on acoustic. I don't like it on drums, nor much else (except electric guitar). Normally on these kinds of threads, people recommend the...

    how is it better

As you may have noticed, there are now about a bajillion mic's in the $100 - $300 range. I don't run a studio, but I'm a home recorder who's gone through the process of buying things, and then trying to "upgrade" mic and pre's etc. I don't see a huge difference in the budget mics, but they...

Dumb Question, sorry: Why do you need AD/DA converters?

I also think that you probably answered your own question. If it sounds good to you, there's no need to fool with things. Simple to say, but I (and probably others around here) who do home recordings tend to always want to upgrade. I think to myself, "boy, if I just get this mic, then my...

    Cheapo car amp distortion

Behringer pedals....that's hilarious. I think that it's the crappy car speakers that are giving you the distortion that you are looking for rather than the actual radio...? I'm not really sure. If I were doing this, I'd get a crappy radio shack speaker - some sort of midrange thing, and then...

I Need help With a Yamaha Mg 10/2

Yup, and one quick addition. Sometimes a change can seem like a good idea at the time, but just seems way too extreme later. I do this all the time, I say things like, "wow, there's so much high end, how did I think that sounded good yesterday?" So I start with all EQ flat. Try to give...

    recording to my vcr?!?

Well, before I had any other options, I would record live to a HiFi Beta VCR. It sounded surprisingly good, but hardly like an analog tape machine. I've also tried to record to a cheap VHS VCR, and it sounded awful...like the mic on a cheap lecture recorder. So in my experience, an expensive...

I need some deep bass rumble HELP!!

I once worked at a library, and they made this demo that included an earthquake (I can't remember why). Anyway, I made the sound for it by taking a brick and shaking it in a box. I took bits, shortened them way up, and pasted them together to get an "earthquake sound." This was a long time...

    simple divice needed

Yes, those are good thoughts above, a little mixer would be the best. Of course, you'll probably have to fight a sound guy about doing something like this at a gig...they tend to dislike giving up control of the sound {smile}. Another thought. I sometimes plug a SM 58 (or any dynamic mic)...

    singer/songwriter - one mic!?

I don't run a studio, but I used to have only one mic and a VCR to record, so I've done a bit of experimentation along these lines. If I were you, I would run the Rode through your good pre and place the mic about an arm length away from the player. About chest level right inbetween the buitar...

    Acoustic guitar picks

I like Dunlop Nylon .88mm. There is less pick noise than with thicker picks, but it seems to be just thick enough for playability. Any thinner and single notes are impossible to get right.
