    Home Recording desk/workstation furniture question

beware of that "studio furniture". It is way overpriced. You can make your own monitor stands and rack. I use a desk from IKEA. I will try and get some photos for this.

Do I really need a DI box?

The only advantage I could see is in quality. Will they both do the job? Yes. Avalon and Radial both make nice DI boxes and radial makes a good reamping box.

    Guitar Hum

Unfortunately you dont have much control with a usb mic. So your going to have to control your guitar amp. I would try decreasing your volume and maybe backing the mic away from the amp.

    Delay stomp box

Analog vs Digital. I think is really pedal specific to which one is best for the song. I have own a DD-6, AD-9, and now a DD-20. For live performance I love the dd-20. You get 5 footswitchable banks. It has a believable analog and tape selection. It also has a tap button or you can plug...

    Allen & heath 16:2 help

That is really what you want. You want the raw track. You don't want to process the signal any on the way in because it's past the point of no return. To use your 8 channel compressor I would suggest bussing out 8 channels from the motu back to your mixer through digital to analog...

Reverb on Bass Guitar and Kick Drum tracks…

I would only do reverb or any effect on kick or bass guitar during a portion of the track where there were only a bass guitar or drums and nothing else in the mix at that short segment in the track. I hope that makes since. If you ever listen to the Melvins then you know what I am talking about.

    Digitech GSP 21

I had one of these. I would only use the reverbs/delays/modulation effects. I hated programming the thing most of all. I would try running it through your effects loop on your amp if you have one.

Backward Masking, does anyone do it anymore?

I feel the exact opposite. The art is there you just have to find it. Mainstream crap is mainstream crap if its recorded at studio big bucks or my house. THe art of music is alive and well more than ever. Today there are so many sub genres. Check out the last free NIN album called "The...

How to deal w/ guitar distortion?

If you have different amps that you like, you could also layer with different amps. IF not layering with the same amp will do. You have to be spot-on the guitar playing to make it work.

ART Pro VLAII - any opinions?

I am curious about the Pro VLA II as well. I do own a 166xl. I tend to like it on a channel insert rather than on the main mix or a sub mix. I would also think the provla would have a less transparent sound being a tube comp.

Why digital is superior to analog

I believe you have to define digital and analog. There is digital media and digital mixing like wise with analog which are two different things. You can use digital media with analog mixing. You could also track to tape then transfer to digital media then mix digital or mix analog. I...

    Guitar recording tips

I am affraid your going to have the same problems using the same pickup with other processing (which is all attack and no over all sound of the guitar). The only real thing I could suggest is the LR Baggs stuff. But nothing will replace the ambiants of mic'ing.

    Mixing OTB

I have recently just started mixing otb. Is there a rule of thumb on setting the level before it goes out? Since I am using a Mackie VLZ Pro, I would like to think It would be better to keep the gain at unity on each channel on the board while maintaining a particular level through the RME...
