    Presonus Firebox

What he said. I have never used reaper, but use cubase exclusively. I imagine there is a control panel of some sort to tell reaper what device you are using and a place where you enable/disable inputs and outputs.

For the third you need a mic preamp to accept the line level inputs 3&4 on the back.

That looks wicked bad. I dig the split output.

    Good and Cheap pedals

Here is a good place to research a second hand find. If you come across something on craiglist. I read these for the hell of it on saturdays. http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Effects

    metal mics

For the vox I hear that the EV RE-20 is popular for that type. I would would try a kick mic or like someone else said the I5 or 57. On the guitar, I always choose the I5 over the 57. But I also like the Senn 421. It is a great mic also for a bass cab. It has a 5 position roll off switch...

    Recommendations On A Boost?

I been thinking of buying a boost pedal. I use single and humbucker guitars and only use tube amps. I built an LPB1 years ago. It about the only boost pedal i have used. Does it get much better? I would also most likely use it as a clean boost.

    Writer's block...

I've came from a garage band background. I find it hard to sit at home and write a complete song alone. I may come up with a piece or part, but I have to hear the other instruments to see what is needed. Otherwise I have no vision.

Why does D.I sound so bad?

I will add by saying it to depends on the sensor you are using in the guitar as well. I have an LR baggs transducer in my martin dx-1. I run it to a vintech dual 72 (500.00 a channel). It sounds pretty good but it mostly picks up the attack of the strings. I will also use a mic to get the...

    just wondering...

I think everyone needs at least one good two channel pre. Or at least the homerecording guitarist. I have a Vintech dual 72. It is the only preamp i have ever owned that sounded apart from the middle of the road gear. Most of the time when I track with it there is no further processing needed...

Do you feel mixing is another performance or something you let sit.

The automation is another great tool. It is wonderful. You can tackle one thing at a time. When one thing is done, hit save and move on. You may come back to that place in the end. I think your an idiot if you don't use it. I say that but some mixes may not require much "on-the-fly" mixing.

Firebox vs Firestudio Mobile? (help please)

I imagine they are the same on both units. I think Greg_L uses one of these units. He has some audio posted in the MP3 Clinic. I would check it out.

Firebox vs Firestudio Mobile? (help please)

The studio has 8 channels of digital to analog conversion for mixing on an analog mixer. Why do this? You may want to use outboard effects on a single channel. Also people like mixing with real knobs and faders.

    What to record 1st?

yep me too, making a click will help determine your bpm to punch in the grid. The lines will then serve a purpose.

    She-Wolf - Greg_L original

I could here everything in the mix on my creative labs pc speakers. I am impressed. Te me it was a rythem section of punk with rock overtones. I should probably read the other post, but how are you getting your kick sound?

    just wondering...

I would say 75% is in the tracking stage (electronics between the guitar and the daw). Chain = guitar / effects / amp(s) / room / mic / micpre / conversion. Mixing is a breeze if all is tracked properly. And I'm sure mastering is a breeze if the mixing is done properly.

New to recording... Working with hardcore/metal groups

With a heavy tone w/ the guitar cab you don't need the room mic or the line out feed. Stick with the one dynamic mic at the cone, but track the rythem guitar multiple times layering. Then pan the different layers to taste in the mix. The drums I belive will be the most problematic. You...

best preamp Mackie vs Soundcraft and 2 recording machine

I think one thing your going to find is that the mackie boards offer more routing options (sub groups, control room, etc...) The pre's: Everyone seems to say the soundcraft is better.
