Is there a source for discerning whether a band name one has chosen is already taken?

Now THAT'S an answer, bdbdbucksKID. Precisely what I was looking for. Many thanks.

If I get an MR-8, do I need a mixer?

Well, ultimately, my vocals will be mixed with a couple of my friend's guitar, bass and drums. They live long distance, so I would be essentially emailing them my vocal track(s) (or posting them on one of their websites if the file is too large). I'm trying to find the best method for...

If I get an MR-8, do I need a mixer?

I think I have decided upon buying an MR-8 and importing the dry tracks I lay down directly to my PC where I will use Ntrack to mix. My recording will primarily consist of vocals and the occasional bit of acoustic guitar. Do I need a mixer?

Trying to figure out how to mix with this scenario

It sounds like I found my answer-the MR-8 used for recording tracks dry and then importing them to N-Track where I can then import my pal's tracks in to mix. This stuff is fun!

Trying to figure out how to mix with this scenario

Ok, here's the deal. My 2 buddies in another city play guitar and drums. I sing. They use Cubase SX. I haven't picked a solution yet. I am deciding between something like an Aardvard soundcard/Pro Audio 9/PC or a digital 8 track with Flash Memory/hard drive/CD-RW. Basically, what I need to...

Not another 'how can I record on my computer' thread!

The only thing that I don't like about the Layla solution is that it has no XLR jacks. I wonder if the Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 has a pcmcia add-on? I'll send them an email and ask.

I was also thinking about a USB-based card with breakout box, so that I could use my laptop to record if I wanted to do so in a funky place. But, I'm reading on this board that the USB's can be tempermental. Any ideas/comments?

IDE or SCSI don't forget RAID

Heck, the WD Raptors are coming down in price. Just buy 2 or 3 of those babies on a Raid 0 config and your smokin!

    PC temperture watching?

This is a great place to post questions about cooling your PC. Hordes of geeks trolling the boards just waiting for your questions... http://www.systemcooling.com/

    New Pc setup choices ??$$

If you're gonna build your own, you had better have a friend that knows what he/she is doing. Inevitably, something will go wrong and if you're a newbie, it will be a VERY frustrating experience. Something that might help is a website like arstechnica.com (I have no affiliation with this...

Is there a source for discerning whether a band name one has chosen is already taken?

Thanks for the responses. I figured since this site dealt with home-grown music, that I would give it a shot. I thought there might be some sort of band name copyright/trademark database that I didn't know about. Good advice and thanks...

OK, I'm thinking about this soundcard: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031024142711012208153239036594/g=rec/search/detail/base_id/55323 This should do the trick, eh?

Got the call - they are using my song in a movie

I just listened to your stuff on CDBaby. Wow. It's quite cool. On a side note, do you happen to play other stringed instruments (cello, etc.). I have an acoustic song with drums and vocals that could use some of that stringed lovin!

Where to send for reviews and indie labels!!!

Hey The Dude, just wanted to throw out a 'good job' on the CDBaby stuff. I especially enjoyed 'Dazed Company'. My only suggestion would be to get a recording where all those wonderful instruments that you have incorporated are a bit more 'clear'. Things seem to be a bit muddy. Otherwise, go...

Cool, thanks for the input. It seems like a decent soundcard coupled with a preamp and some good software might be the way to go. I have a set of the Klipsch 2.1s-they are unreal for sound.

Not another 'how can I record on my computer' thread!

I mentioned having a 4-track because I thought there might be a way to transfer music from it to my computer in a clear, easy way. I've tried it before-4 track directly into the soundcard-and it sounds terrible. Again, total newbie here, so thanks for taking the time to listen, er read!

Not another 'how can I record on my computer' thread!

Alas, yes. I, like many of my fellow newbies, have trolled these boards looking for a solution on how to effectively record music on my computer. Here's my situation: -I wish to record my vocals and an acoustic guitar. I wont need to do it at the same time. -I would like to be able to burn a...
