    Tascam 48-OB SLOW Playback

Run the following experiment: 1. Power on the machine and in STOP mode with tape loaded, touch slightly the capstan with your finger to feel the speed. (the white axle that rotates) 2. With the finger still on the capstan hit PLAY with the tape. Do you feel a significant reduction on the...

    Tascam 48-OB SLOW Playback

Some questions: 1. How slow is turtle mode ? half ? 2. Is the slowness variable or fixed ? so you can record and it plays the same or it is not constant ? 3. Does it come to a stop ? 4. Was it like this when you bought it ? or it started later ? 5. From all the different tapes that you have...

    What's a MS16 really worth?

paint code i know... i'll send it to you. Your MS16 is in pristine condition, by looking at the head pictures and the aesthetics. Don't get dissapointed by calibration. You can also modify it to run at 15 ips if that is your main issue. It will also be cheaper to send it to a well...

    What's a MS16 really worth?

why do you want a second one ? :) if the recorder is in very good shape is worth that. Those heads are discontinued now, so it's all about the heads. You can probably go up to 2" 24 tracks for ~3K. And a 2" machine is better than two 1"1 tascams. Assuming is an Otari or MCI. Tape cost...

Good reel to reel for Tascam M30?

From all the half inch 8 track recorders, that will be the last I'll look for. Early design, older, likely in worse condition. Parts hard to find. However if it is in very good shape and you have a way to confirm that, then I'll get it. How much are they as,Inge you for that ?

Good reel to reel for Tascam M30?

A TSR8 is also a very good option. Built-in DBX, smoother transport, more modern.

likely U7 is the culprit, but need to probe first. Now, U7 i dont know what part number is and if it is obtainable. Here's what i would do: 1. Measure the voltage on the erase head - you will need to use the RMS voltmeter for this. Hook it up to a scope probe and do it. You need to be...

ok, check BIAS adjustment on the broken card. Have you considered on investing on a spare card ? you probably want to have one anyway. If not, i am not sure if you can repair it. Are you good at soldering and desoldering PCBs ?

    MS16 Calabration

ok do the following test: Take a reel of blank tape. and record something, does it record anything ? Now, the schematics for the repro/play card is on page 9-10 in the manual. You may have fried U7, which is probably impossible to find at this point. But before concluding that. Check...

    Basics of head azimuth

the noise is the transport which is normal. that is not too bad, i would leave it like that if you can't get it any narrower.

    Basics of head azimuth

what you see in the pictures above is as good as it gets, if you get it like that @ 16khz tone from your MRL, you are good to go.

ok, so it looks like card 2 is the problem. how are you with soldering ? next steps is to trace the signal in the pcb card, component by component and try to locate the faulty component. You can also buy a full spare card - cost is ~$75 or so.

    MS16 Calabration

ok, so to confirm, if you put that card say on channel 10, then channel 10 won't work ?. So the failure follows the channel where that card is installed. That means that there is a problem with that card, and we need to rootcause it. reconfirm that is the case. then we need to fnid out...

you also need to increase the sampling rate of the scope software. those pictures show a very low sample rate. You need at least 40khz sample rate

    MS16 Calabration

Is track 3 the only one not working ? what about 4-16 ? Now swap card 3 with say card 10. or one that you know it works. what happens ? report back. P.S make sure that when you swap cards the recorder is off and that the cards are inserted properly. good luck.

    MS16 Calabration

hi, yes DBX off always. Swap cards and see if the behavior follows the cards. If there is distortion it may be BIAS related, we may need to revisit that procedure. Try the following, record all tracks at the same time with a zero input signal (nothing connected) and see if erase works...

    Tascam MS16 Capstan!

it can be modified to make it stop. but that is how it comes from the factory, the same for the tascam 42 and 52. Others like the tascam 32, tsr8, stop when the tape is unthreaded and the tension roller comes down.

    MS16 Calabration

ok, lets recap. questions: 1. Did you finished the BIAS adjustments as per the manual ? did you do the 0dB on the VU meter, etc ? 2. Did you touch the BIAS trap adjustments ? 3. Make sure the erase head is well connected - it has a blue connector 4. When you record nothing (no input...

Tascam 32 reel table wobbling / adjustment ? need help.

take the reel table out. then separate the shaft holder from the reel table itself. Then take the shaft holder and put it on a lathe to flatten it on top and the sides, so it has a flat but snug fit back in the reel table.
