    Direct Guitar Recording

crazy thing Crazy thing , this weekend. I got this idea for a tune, and instead of burning up my precious, expensive tubes (13 tubes in my Mesa) , since it was a 'clean' peice, I plugged my guitar direct into my mixer!!!! Set the mixer's EQ settings to fit my taste. So I laid down the...

Best suggested mic position for clean warm bluesy tones

true enough , primarily since you'de be judging a primarily mono signal .. there's no need to worry about the stereo field. However, in my case, the headphones frequency response is completely dead wrong compared to my monitor's flat frequency response curve... a product of cheap headphones i...

micing guitar amp with a mic preamp

thanks. Well there's no question that a mixer provides a current loops for mic's that don't require a phatom supply. That's the setup i have now .. in this case, do i consider the mixer a type of cheap preamp ... or should i go get myself a tube preamp?

Best suggested mic position for clean warm bluesy tones

i think they're telling you to experiment and most importantly, use your ears. When i'm looking for a different sound .. i start with the amp's sound (obviously) .. and then i do lots of running around for the mic position : 2 phases: Phase 1: Use headphones (from your recording console)...

    Getting that HEAVY chunk

i'm a metal head. getting chunk is a big deal for me. Listen to Symphony X with Micheal Romeo and you try to tell me that his sound doesn't have the biggest balls you've ever heard. Ballsier than panthera (i'm not knocking anybody). That's the sound i'm after. I haven't acheived it .. but i...

    Direct Guitar Recording

mic'd I mic vocals, drums, guitars. For me , a mic'd tube amp sounds best. I've tried solid state, I've tried DI redbox, I've tried amp emulation 'processors' from several companies (Line6, Korg, Boss, Yahmaha) .. not for me. For the style of music I play, through experimentation and trying...

micing guitar amp with a mic preamp

Was wondering if people use mic pre's when tracking guitar amps. So far, it has been my assumption to just mic the amp, line the mic to the mixer and that's all. (SM57) Been getting good results, but am just wondering if the 'best' results are with a mic pre with EQ set flat. .. Or does the...

Can't get the limiter settings right HELP!!!!!

Silly qestion ... but why exactly do you need to 'max out' your levels with a limiter? I know what it's for. I know why it's used. Could you just increase the volume of the mix and only add a small amount of limitting to ensure that no clipping occurs and get a wee amount of 'loudness...

    Mastering with T-Racks

Absolutely nothing wrong with 80's dialect man. It's era that spawned much progressive rock (my fav) and the dialect is basically an extension to the shit hippies where saying in the 60's. There isn't anything wrong with the 60's in that respect now is there. I've met many 26~38 year olds use...

Do you really care about 24/96?

now that's a great question geekgurl. I can't wait to see the answer. I've been wondering that myself . .. cause if 48 is proven better, then, I'll change my CPU and go for it.

    my tone

line noise ey?? How close was he to his computer monitor when recording?? - Make sure you're 15 feet from your equipment. (Especially the monitor. shut it off if you can't afford 15 feet) - Ensure the power cables going to your equipment are running perpendicular to any cheap audio cable. -...

Do you really care about 24/96?

24/44.1 for me. Computer is slow (1.2GHz) and so I can't afford a boost in sampling rate. 24 is great cause I can track a singer without using an outboard compressor. Given the dynamic range at which i'm recording, (whispers to yells) , given my noisy mixer faders, and given the fact that...

    50W vs. 100W

True enough about the triple rect shaking the club before the power tubes kick in. I actually get very decent distortion for what I play at almost bedroom levels .. it's odd. And yeah, the power tubes aren't contribuing much to my sound. With both of my monster amps, I get wonderful sound ...

    Mastering with T-Racks

here's another tip. This is my last tip for you if you want to avoid any attitude. It's totally off topic. This applies to all the forumns. Everybody on this board pays for ALL of the software they use. Wether they forked out 200$ for TRacks or 1000$ for the waves plugins. (Yeah they're like...

    Mastering with T-Racks

nah .. you have to behave really humbly and hope the bear doesn't eat you. Seriously. Look in the article archives .. see if the questions been asked before. If it hasen't been answered adequately, refer to the article. This is the only forumn that has attitude ... perhaps some people need to...

    Mastering with T-Racks

Dude. ... and i'm not rolling my eyes. You have to know that the word 'mastering' is a no-no around here unless you can prove that you've done it for like 10 years or so. I got pretty much the same attitude when I posted similar questiions under various aliases around here earlier on last...

    my tone

I can't seem to download the tune. Did you move it? what's your sampling rate? did you put any pc effects on it? are your recording levels high enough to actually get some good dynamic range? (If you're signal is barely getting into the PC and you compensate for it by using a software...
