    Home Recording Books

Compressing everything at 4:1? Well, there was a concensus on this board a while back that final mixes should never be compressed at more than 2:1. Compression should be adjusted to suit the track or mix. McIan says this, to be fair - his settings are only starting points. It's just by always...

    Soundcraft

I've got an F1 16. I like it. I've run drum machines, guitars, vocals, bass and a synth through it. All sound fine and clean. The EQ is good. The pre-amps sound okay. On the negative side the unit doesn't seem that robust, it's very light, the knobs and sliders have a very cheap feel to them...

    Home Recording Books

I've found Peter McIan's 'Using your portable studio' very useful despite being dated. He's prepared to be more specific than many writers of books for home recordists. e.g. he includes EQ settings for drums, guitars, bass, etc., to get you started. He compresses everything at 4:1 though.

    U.K mixers

This is a review of the M-series. It concentrates on the M8 but might be of use. The preamps are supposed to be very good. http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/sep01/articles/spiritmseries.asp

Akai s2000 placing samples into programs

Hi, can anyone explain how you place samples into programs using an Akai S2000. The manual says you can do this but I can't find anywhere where it explains how to actually do it. Thanks.

    Spirit Folio F1

I've been using the Spirit Folio F1 (16 channel version) for about the last six months. I'm very happy with it. It's good where it counts - in the way it sounds. I've put drum machines, bass, keyboards, guitar and vocals through it and they all come out sounding fine: clean and accurate. The EQ...

    hooking Tascam up to PC

The basics you would need would be a cable going from the Line-outs of the Tascam to the Line-in[s] of the PC soundcard. Typically, this cable would have RCA connectors at the Tascam end and a 1/8th" stereo jack at the the soundcard end - though this would depend on what connections your Tascam...

    Joemeek

Yeah, got a great bass sound using a VC3 v.2, after ignoring the recommended settings in the manual and playing around with the unit till I liked what I heard. Warm full sound, with bite to taste, courtesy of the enhancer.

I shouted "THIS IS MIDI MADNESS!!!"

Lots of places in the UK, and I assume the US too, offer DAWs set up for music recording, all software and hardware tested for compatibility issues etc. You pay more for these DAWs of course.

    what sequencer?

I bought one new in Academy of Sound in Leeds two months ago for £329. At the time Digital Village were selling them for £299. I just checked their web site and they're now selling them for £369. Academy of Sound may still have them at £329.

    Boycott Pace Interlok Technology !

I had the same situation with Acid Music 2. I thought I'd misread it at first, but no, if you change your PC your software's dead. Being a law abiding type I don't approve of cracks, but in this situation - having paid for software you can no longer use - I think it's justified.

    Outboard Compressors VS Plugins

I switched to hardware compressors and EQ because I thought the software variety degraded the sound. I've not used top level software, though, so I can't say for sure.

    headphone record vocals problem

I've had this problem too. The solution was just getting used to it, plus fiddling with the mixer to make sure I got good volume on both the music and my vocal. The second wasn't completely straightforward and did take some experimentation with different knobs and sliders.

    what sequencer?

Here's a review of the Yamaha RM1X in case you haven't seen it already. http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/feb99/articles/yamaharm1x.htm I've had one for a couple of months now and it's great. You can use a Midi keyboard to play the onboard synth. You can use the sequencer to control your...

    Zoom effects processor

Here's a review: http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/1997_articles/sep97/zoom1201.html I've got one but I haven't used it much. I've messed around with Delay and Ring Modulation. Both were fun and sounded good to me but I've now idea how it would rate quality-wise with other comparable units.

    Reverb

That should be Nanoverb, of course. The Decay on it can be adjusted by ear to match tempo, which is good. Having tin ears rather than golden ones I can't comment on the sound. I'll back up the earlier recommendation of a Lexicon LXP1. I bought one used a while back - £110 - and even I can hear...
