You don't need a mixer, you can plug the DR-770 straight into the multitracker. You can run it through a mixer if you want to do stuff like add effects etc. Can't comment on either the Boss or Fostex multitrackers. I have a Tascam 788 which I like a lot.
The Audio Buddy is a mic preamp. The MQ3 is a compressor and mic preamp plus EQ section. In theory if you bought the MQ3 you wouldn't need the Audio Buddy. My understanding is that the Audio Buddy has a more neutral sound, which may be an issue.
With the latest version of the Tascam 788 digital 8-track you transfer Wav files between the 788 and a PC, though you have to get the optional extra CD burner to be able to do this. I read one post on the Tascam 788 forum saying you can only transfer mono files this way, but I don't see how this...
Have a look at the 788 forum on Tascam's site, if you haven't already. There's details there about the video, plus a whole lot of other stuff.

It's recommended that you clean the tape heads very regularly - as often as before and after each recording session. By stop playing back do you mean the machine actually stops running? If so, I've no idea why that would be. But if you mean that the machine doesn't make any sound on Playback...
What sort of volume levels are you talking about when you do this? As loud as a TV? Not as loud? Loud enough to drown out a TV? Been struggling with this myself recently.
I have a little mixer with XLR main stereo outs. Currently I'm using Hosa interconnect cables - XLR to mono jack. One of them's faulty and I need a replacement. Most of the possible replacements I've seen are microphone cables. This is my question: is there any difference between a so called...
You can add SimSynth to the step sequencer, just like you do with drums, hi-hats, etc. - that's using the presets. There's a drop down screen to change the notes. For chords you use the piano roll. To add SimSynth settings programmed by you, you use the drop down menu to insert a new line on the...
You are. The machine's good. The forum is very good. 16 tracks would be better, particularly for recording live drums, but I couldn't afford any of the current 16 trackers, £500 being my absolute max. Can't even afford the CD-ROM drive. I'm trying to put one together on the cheap buying from...
Doing this, recently, helped me with the same problem: I hung a duvet over the door, then stood between it and the mic to do vocals - took out a lot of unwanted bass and boxiness. I got the idea from Sound on Sound.
I've got a Samson Servo 170 and JBL Control 1s. The Samson's ok. There are much better amps but they cost more. If the Samson packs up I'll replace it with a Hafler, otherwise it'll do for for bedroom mixing. The Control 1s I find very difficult to mix with. I've replaced them with Tannoy...
You can use any burner with the 788, connected to the digital out. However, this would just be for finished mixed down songs. To back up individual tracks you need either Tascam CDR788 or CDRW788, or the TEAC equivalents - CD-R56S, CD-R58S, CD-W512S, CD-R624S. The TEACS might need a case, power...
Both the VF16 and the 788 have been comprehensively and favourably reviewed in Sound on Sound. The reviews are available online here: http://www.sospubs.co.uk
The VF16 looks a nice machine. 16 tracks would be very nice. In both cases you have to weigh up the total package and see which suits...
Lots of happy Tascam 788 users here at this forum for the 788. Well worth a look if you're thinking of getting one:

I've recently gone back to using a Tascam 424 after two years recording on a PC and find it much...
