    Insert vs Send/Return Effects

    Applying effects later is safer. You can take it off if it doesn't work. Guitar is often recorded with effects as the sound affects your playing. Some people like the risk of printing with effects - Tony Visconti, for one, according to his intro. to TapeOp magazine. Printing with effects was...

    788 SCSI-2 to Computer PCI SCSI expantion card

    The CDW512S will run direct with the 788. It's one of the three compatible TEAC drives. To run it you need an external case to put it in (if you haven't already got one), a power cable, the right SCSI lead, and probably a SCSI terminator. You should be able to get all these dirt cheap on Ebay.

    788 SCSI-2 to Computer PCI SCSI expantion card

    I'm writing from memory but I don't think you're supposed to do this. I think the 788 and PCs are incompatible. I know for certain that you're not supposed to connect any CD burner to the SCSI port on the 788 except for the approved Tascam ones (and the three TEAC drives they actually use)...

    788 CD burner options

    The cheap option, if you can be bothered, is to buy the CD drive used, plus an external case for it, a SCSI lead and, probably, a SCSI terminator. Only three drives are compatible. They are the TEAC CDW512S, TEAC CDR56S, TEAC CDR58S. These are the drives used in Tascam's various versions of...

    Ampex MM1200 for $2000

    An Ampex MM1200 16 Track 2" recorder just sold on Ebay.co.uk for £1,120 ($2000 approx.). Is that a good price? It was in good condition according to the blurb.

    what's a punch-in?

    It's where you erase an error and replace it with the part correctly played or sung. You can set up the recorder to start and finish at exactly the right points so you don't record over the bits you want to keep.

    POD latency

    Thanks. This is potentially good news as I can upgrade to version 2.0 for about £50.

    POD latency

    Thanks. It was. More or less confirms my own experience. I'm using the POD bean Version 1. Possibly Line6 have made [big?] improvements since.

    POD latency

    Okay, what's the concensus? Is there latency when playing through the POD? i.e. a delay between hitting the string and hearing the sound. I thing there is but I know how easy it is to fool yourself with this sort of thing. The link includes a post - it's near the end - which quotes from an...

    POD or mic an amp?

    No. This is just into a mixer along with a drum machine. It's probably just my imagination.

    POD or mic an amp?

    Is it my imagination or is there a slight delay - like a few microseconds - between hitting a string and the string sounding when using a POD?

    Just ordered a 788

    No problem. All that stuff I wrote was about using a SCSI CD burner and the SCSI output on the 788. As you've seen, the stereo outputs can be used with any suitable device.

    Just ordered a 788

    The official line from Tascam has always been that only a very small number of TEAC/Tascam burners are compatible with the 788. Others won't work or might even damage the machine. That said, some people on the old Tascam.com forum reported using other drives successfully. Most people seemed to...

    788-> computer->CD-R

    I was thinking of individual instrumental tracks rather than a complete song.

    788-> computer->CD-R

    If you have a CD burner for the 788 and recent enough firmware you can transfer your tracks as Wav files from the 788 to the PC. I haven't done this myself as my 788 is too old. But I believe this is a feature of the later firmware. All this was covered on the Tascam.com forum but that seems to...

    Tascam 424MKIII to PC?

    They're at the back, low down. 4 RCA outputs.

    Tascam 424MKIII to PC?

    The 424 iii has individual Outs for each track, so if you hooked them up to a soundcard/breakout box with four individual inputs and you have software that will record four individual tracks at once, you could do what you want to do (if I've understood you correctly). You'd have to check the...

    Do people in Leicester even have an accent? Gary Lineker-alikes? :) I'll check out the Event forum.

    Cheap Mic?

    The SM57 doesn't run on batteries. You'd use a standard mic cable, usually with XLR connections at either end, or maybe with a 3.5 " jack at the soundcard end. Whether or not it will plug into the soundcard would depend on what connections the soundcard has. Usually the mics plugged into a...

    Dull drone-y vocals

    My songs are being spoiled by dull drone-y vocals (mine). Anyone got any tips about how I can remedy this? For instance, I have quite a deep voice so have been cutting EQ heavily at lower frequencies. Now I'm wondering if this is counterproductive and I'm removing all the energy?
