Final mix check - Thank You

Cool song - very catchy. I can see that I will be humming this to myself all night! The basic rhythm guitar groove is killer. But I agree that there's something about the acoustic guitars that's holding the mix back. For one thing, the stereo guitars are often slightly out of synch after the...

    Jenny Jones, New song

I didn't hear the original mix, but this sounds good to me. Really nice song, and I love the guitar tones. Concur though that the vocals are a bit wandering, and low-key. It works well in the beginning, but I wanted to hear them "toughen up" in the chorus. They are sort of submerged in the...

    Dreamy Psych-Folk original

Thanks for the feedback guys - glad that the de-mudding was effective! Yeah, I agree that the song should develop a bit more. Part of the trouble is that the two verses were recorded a couple of years ago, and now I'd have to go back and re-learn the various amp settings, mic placement, etc...

    Dreamy Psych-Folk original

Thanks for the encouragement & critique Ray. I posted a revised mix on: https://soundcloud.com/jm67dc/happysong3-mix3 It's not radically different from the original, but I tried to "demud" further by cutting lows on the acoustic guitars and synth. I then got rid of the warbly (Leslie)...

    Dreamy Psych-Folk original

Thanks for the listen and the suggestions. I'll listen to the bass again - maybe I got so used to hearing the line that I didn't notice it wasn't supporting the guitar.

    Dreamy Psych-Folk original

Hi all, I dusted off a guitar piece recorded a couple of years ago and finished it off with some vocals & various bits of weirdness. The intent is a dreamy, hazy feeling, so there are some chorusy effects on the lead vocal. I like the sound, but I'm sure opinions will vary. Right now the...

    Bells And Whistles

Nice piece. It seems to have more harmonic interest than most electronic music (eg. the little modulation that occurs at 0:37 and throughout the song). I'm probably not the person to comment on the mix; I guess if anything the drums (other than the bass drum) were a bit quiet. The coda was cool.

    New track for a friend

I don't have much to add on the mix... it sounded good to me. If anything I'd bring up the vocals a bit and make them a little brighter. But... this is one of the best songs I've heard on this site in quite a while. It's really well arranged, sung, and played. Thanks!

    Vanish mix/critique

Yeah, the chorus is too loud and squashed. The vocals get drowned by the other instruments in that part. Particularly the piano that comes in during the chorus. I think the kick drum is too powerful also - I'd cut a little <100 Hz for the kick. I like the song. At first I was thinking...

Haven't recorded in years, couldn't mix then, can I now?

That's a cool song. It reminds me a little of the Decemberists, although they drive some people crazy so maybe that's not the comment you were looking for :). The instrumentation sounds good - the banjo/guitar combination is well played. There's something weird about the section from...

New Song - Electronic ballad of sorts?

It sounds nice. Cool how the instrumentation & sonic texture evolves throughout the piece. As far as the mix, the lead "piano" seems a bit muddy - too much percussive low end.

me & my cat cover the psychedelic furs

It's purrfect. What did you have to do to the cat to make it make that noise?? Mine doesn't do that! Only comment on the mix is that the xylophone sound is a little loud, and sort of "clinky". I always loved that song. Nice reverby vocal at the end.

Looking for a synth VST that sounds just like regular piano.

I use TruePiano by 4Front - its not free ($130 US) but sounds pretty good, and includes lots of variants. For freebie there used to be MDA Piano but I imagine there's something better out there by now.

how to make strings sound real?

One common error is to have the same attack througout a song. Sometimes that's okay (e.g. if the strings are just background "washes"). But often you want some to mix staccato and legato phrases. As mentioned above, you can also layer multiple instruments (samples or soundfonts) - a cello, a...

    This Weeks Mix - Sugar

It sounded pretty good to me. At first I thought the vocal was too dry, but in the end I liked it that way. Something weird happens to the drum roll (at 0:37) - sounds like its distorting in my headphones. I'd also bring down the ringing cymbal in the chorus a tad.

Rusty Cage, Rock N Roll Man

Think I agree with everything that's been said before. I like the song and the vocal - reminds me of the old Georgia Satellites. But the mix is a problem. Too much low end (and not enough definition) on the bass; the lead guitar sounds like a dentist's drill, and the guitar should generally be...

    Suicide suite

I listened to the first song "Was that a smile". Neat concept, arrangement, and piano backing track. I would work on the vocal though - it's off-pitch in places, and I agree that some of the bass could be rolled off. Right now it feels sort of like you are speaking right into my ear, rather...

old tune, brand new recording - "Not That Bad"

Sounds good - the complexity of the arrangement gives each section its own personality. And I like the introduction of the synth in the chorus. My only nit would be that the low synth part (like at 1:10) is too prominent. I'd either tame the low end, or drop the volume slightly at that point...

    Temple of my life

On my headphones, the bass is dominating the mix, and sort of squishing everything else out of the way. You could try reducing the mix compression, reducing the volume of the bass, or EQ'ing out some of the bass (maybe around 100Hz). I like the idea of the song and the vocals, but the...

    Collaboration with Miroslav and jordo!

This sounds great to me, and agree it's much improved from the original mix. Love the dual pedal-steel and double-stop lead. I can't think of anything I'd change (other than fading out a bit earlier, as you already said you'd do).
