Sheesh, passed over it a half dozen times I am sure as I didn't get out of it at all what you said above. Thanks!

    SM94 v KSM109 v PG81 v MXL604 drum OHs?

Where abouts? I dug through for about 45 mins and didn't find it as I figured it had to be covered there... Off to dig some more.

    SM94 v KSM109 v PG81 v MXL604 drum OHs?

Yeah, forget micing the hats. Use that 57 on a tom or something else. As for OHs, there are 100 choices out there. I personally like a LDC for an over head (I typically use AT4050s for OHs). But SDCs work fine too. Unless you are going to drop some major coin, pick something and go with it. Most...

    upgrade?

Maybe a second PZM panel at an angle to the first in a smashed V shape over the kit perhaps? If you like that PZM sound, that may be your best bet as you already know you like it. The thing that will likely disappoint you in the mics you mentioned is that they are cardioid and they will not have...

    Great River....get 1 or 2 channels?

Yup, say bye bye to the RNP. Two channels of GR will give you a great signal path for all kinds of great mono and stereo recordings. I would imagine considering you are doing acoustic guitar you will definitely want to record that in stereo plus what ever else might "need" some stereo love...

Can you get airy but not harsh in a cheap mic?

I was going to say that along with perhaps an ADK Vienna or AT4050. Maybe a Blue Baby Bottle too.... maybe. IMO of the ones I listed, the AT4050 is probably the least one trick pony-ish. I always sort of hate sheen on vocals though as I find so often I just EQ it out to play nice with cymbals.

Can U recommend a tube mic preamp?

Maybe you can dig up a Universal Audio Solo 610 used for that kind of scratch. It is a fairly colored pre, so know what you are getting into. Kidvybes is right on too. Transformers are something else that can add that syrup.

    Should I get an SM7?

Yes, the SM7 does need a good amount of gain as it isn't the hottest mic on the planet... but I have gotten good results out of mine even on real shit pres. Does a Great River make an SM7 sound better... sure. Is it mandatory, hell no. Any reasonable pre will get the job done.

    Should I get an SM7?

Wrong question. Correct question: How many SM7s should I get? Compared to the C1, the SM7 will be much smoother as it doesn't have the top end sheen/brittleness. Also, realize that the Beta 58 is a stage mic with a presence boost to cut through a mix. The SM7 will be much flatter (well, maybe...

You mean M for "Macho" I believe. ;) So 1" in and up? Right on the rim eh? Thanks!

    Md421

I just scored an MD421 on ElBay looking to use it specifically on my floor tom. In other's experience, how have you positioned this mic and set the roll off? Not that I won't experiment myself and listen, but I am curious as to what others do and why. My floor tom always sounds a little too...

    Informal Mic Shootout

Likely a bad idea as you want all things equal in a test like this. EQ would just give us a false sense of each mic. It is like if you gave professional taste testers a bottle of ketchup to go with everything they tasted. I have to agree with the above... the 414 was the best to my ear with the...

    Mic choice for disotorted guitars

I dunno, sounds pretty good to me. I would want to hear it in a mix to make a final judgment, but soloed, sounds pretty swell.

    Mic choice for disotorted guitars

The only mics I can add to the 57 and 609 are the Audix i5, Sennheiser MD421, and Shure SM7. Then you can go crazy with condensors. Damn near anything (dynamics, condensors, ribbons) works on guitar cabs depending on what sound you want.

The one mic mentioned in the thread 100 times but not in the poll and very worthy of looking at is the Audix D6.

    What's a step up from the SM58?

You never really stated if this was for live or recording use. Live, the Sennheiser e835s are a great mic as are the Audix OM5s. I use both a lot. Recording wise, pretty much anything mentioned above works. The Heil, SM7, the Studio Project offerings, CAD, etc.

    Group Buy Interest?

So I am still a bit confused on the FET deal. If you have two choices of tube or FET, why do some mics push the fact that they are FET (like the AT4047) where from what I gather, everything else they make is FET more or less too like the 4040, 4033, or 4050? Or is it more the fact it has a...
