    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

So buy it already!!! You have spent a week screwing around trying to get everyone to "convince" you its ok. The only reasons NOT to are either 1) money or 2) space. You have already justified the money part, and I see at least some interest in Matilda going outhte door intact, so that...

...so I got all these tapes...

More results: Runnignthe tape end to end at fast wind with the lifters up. The "good" tape would up at full speed...the fast wind on the Otari spools up like an aircraft engine at takeoff. The "bad" stuff did the opposite, running it to a dead halt within 15 or 20 seconds. Again my presumption...

...so I got all these tapes...

I ran the first tape from the 456 group...code on the reel is 92226.. which going by the info above is the 226 day of 1992. Made it about 30 seconds into fast wind when it suddenly and dramatically slowed down and started screeching. Moments later I had to stop the tape and the guides were...

...so I got all these tapes...

Thanks Beck. I will read thru the sticky-sticky thouroghly. Unfortunately, the previous owner is...... unavailable. A year or two back there was a well publicised double homicide and subsequent manhunt that originated at a local recording studio. I purchased the machine and tapes by responding...

...so I got all these tapes...

Ok. After a good cleanup of all tape contact surfaces, I have been running my initial record & play tests using one of the GP9 reels, which has run all the way thru a least twice. Absolutely no gunk deposits anywhere, so I have a tape I can baseline with. I am going to run thru everything that...

...so I got all these tapes...

Dang... I know there is some 91/92 in that batch of tapes, but also some as late as 1998. Again, I am assuming that the tapes is would back on the original reels.

...so I got all these tapes...

Once again I broke my vow and bought another tape machine.. an Otari 5050 1/2" 4 track, and it came with 24 reels of tape. Most of it appears to be Ampex 456 which a few reels are Quantegy GP9. I say "appears to be" as I am going under the assumption that the tape is on the original reels, if...

    Question about old reverberation amplifiers..

I second that thought on the home reverb units. I ve had that same Sansui and a Pioneer unit ( the one with the funky blue faux display) and they were both crap. I am shamed to admit i now use a Yamaha digital unit that works quite nicely....

    Tape Editing (the eagles)

I used to do a lot of editing on 1/4" tape when I was doing theatre and radio production. I recall having short and long strips of tape draped everywhere, and multiple reels with longer sections waiting to be spliced together. I actually enjoyed the splicing part of the process, getting...

    Overpriced thrift store junk!

...and on EBAY your have to take the word of the seller on condition, in most cases unless its a local deal where you can check it out. And EVERYBODY thinks their stuff is 'mint'. Even the bs'ers who cant seem to come up with a $1.50 power cord for something they want a couple hundred dollars...

A Couple Ampex 440 Questions (Cory??)

I am a bit befuddled about what you up against. On my 440 C machines, the pinch roller (looks kinda like your ebay picture) just slides over the pinch roller arm shaft that is permanently attached to the arm, and then the aluminum cap screws on to the intenally threaded shaft . The roller has a...

Are all 3340 units created equal?

Are you sure you are not confusing with the 2340? This unit was cosmetically and functionally similar to the 3340 but only accepted 7" reels and ran at 3 3/4 + 7 1/2 ips.

    Problem with Tascam 388 - Track 8 won´t print

I never jacked with it but there is a switch on the back that has something to do with track 8 and disabling something for using that track for SMPTE striping. Check the position of that switch.

Tascam 388 Playback,Fwd,Rwd issue. Please Help!

Sounds like it thinks its does not have tape threaded. It would shut down like that if it ran the tape off the end of the reel, so whatever sensors that need to be satisfied to convince it tape is loaded are not engaging. ??? Not in my studio or looking at the manual....just thinking.

Maxell XLI and XLII ¼" Tape from 1980's - Any Market Value?

I've got Maxell from that era and it is just fine. If its not shedding, I'd sell the tape. Maxell is usually pretty good stuff, expecially the XLII

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Cory, You are correct that the waveforms dont match. The bottom of the waveform on the alternating half cycles is cutoff early. I am not sure why, but if it were me I would replace the bridge rectifier. That odd half cycle is going to be hard to filter out and may be the cause of the slight AC...

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Ok, so if the DC waveform you ae showing is at the output of the bridge rectifier, it should look like the bottom picture below....which it does, right? All the bridge is doing is inverting the lower half (negative swing) of the AC. To get flat line DC you need the post bridge filter cap. You...

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

I have to think about it a bit, but that DC waveform looks like a half wave rectified AC waveform. Is this after the filter cap?
