Technical musings: direct-drive or belt-drive capstan?

For turntables the more operative issue was :::rumble:::, or picking up low frequency noise from outside sources. The playback mechanism ion a turntable s completely different than tape, i.e. the primary content transfer point ( the stylus) is an electro-MECHANICAL one. The number one place...

    Local Craigslist 24 track

Just down the street from me. I did not even know there WAS someone in town with a 24 track analog studio, no less THREE machines. http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/msg/1661992206.html I'm tempted to call him just for a demo...:)

Tacam 112 runs slightly fast -

I have acquired two Tascam 112 machines, and both exhibit the same problem. With the varispeed OFF, they both run a bit fast...not much, but enough to hear a pitch change on pre-recorded music. When the Vari speed is turned ON, the thing spools up to high speed and the vari speed pot does...

    1/4" half-track TEAC RTR at both 7.5ips and 3.75ips?

If you are not stuck on having a Teac, at least some (maybe all) models of the Otari MX 5050 can be set to run either 7.5/ 15 or 3.75/7.5 by changing internal jumpers. This would yield a half track 3.75 machine capability.

    TEAC A-3440 Reel Wobble

My first thought is a bent reel. The noise you are hearing is the tape edge scraping against the reel flange on each revolution. Is it ANY reel you put on.? If it does it with any reel, then the reel tables may not be sitting flat, meaning bent table shafts or bent motor shafts. With reels off...

    Spectral analysis of Vinyl...

I've always been a bit put off by audiophile demands of "flat" equalization and "zero harmonic distortion". In the real world neither of these exist or are actually desirable. An instrument played and recorded in an anechoic chamber may be free of any outside harmonics or "distortions", but...

Otari 1/2" 4-tracks... avoid or buy?

FWIW... Otari machines for me have been more difficult than some others to troubleshoot. Very complex machines. I bailed on my MTR-10 after a few weeks of frustration. They may be great machines, but you have to consider the long haul...are they servicable and are parts available? The sheer size...

Looking for an 8 Track Analog Recorder

In the US, 90%+ is available at the drugstore or in the pharmacy area of many supermarkets. You may have to ask the pharmicist for it, but its not regulated or restricted on anything.

    A Question About Tape Baking

I'm definitely not the expert, but if the tapes are 50 yrs+ old, then they are likely an early acetate based tape. I have never heard of tapes that old having the sticky problem. That was something that cropped up in the 80's on the newer tapes due to a change in the binder used for binding the...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

Not much to report. The day job went into overdrive and I haven't seen the inside of my studio in weeks. Where I was at before the dam break: >> It plays fine on both speeds, brakes release, tension is good. >> ONE TIME when I powered it up it worked perfect for about ten minutes, which in my...

    Tascam BR-20 on E-bay!

I don''t really know if they are any better, but I do all my shipping now by FedEx ground. Its less costly than UPS, and I have never had a shipment damaged. Now, that said, I massively overpack stuff to make sure it gets thru in one piece. My wife laughs at me and thinks I'm nuts, but I'd...

Tascam 234 got spilled water into it

Too bad he didnt open it up right away an dry it out. Water in itself wont usually hurt electronics IF they are powered off when it happens. Are you sure it was just water or was it beer or soda or something that would have left residue when it dried?? If iit was powered on when it got wet it...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

Thanks...yeah, I de-ox'ed all the switches and pots first off, as typically something is going to be scratchy or intermittant on a vintage machine. . That goes for doing a un-plug and replug on every connector and edge connector. Clean and lube, check all the rubber parts for stickys, clean...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

NOTHING happens when FF or rewind is pressed. No reel motor power, no brake release, NADA. Everything behaves properly in play and record mode at both speeds. The brakes release and the reel motor spin and etc. It's just FF and REW that are totally non-functional. (except for one 10 minute...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

Thanks Jinn. yes, Its a MX 5050B-II-2 I tried some manual checks this weekend. >> Unplugged and replugged every connector internally to check for loose connectiosn (again) and break up any potential oxidation >> Flipped out the rear circuit board, which contains most of those Omron relays...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

UPDATE TIME. So last night I'm walking by the 5050, so I just randomly turn it on hit FF and THE DAMN THING WORKS.....for about five minutes anyway, fast foward and rewind worked perfect..... Than thay stopped working again. Gremlins What makes me VERY optimistic now is that in my mind it...

    Ampex AG-440B-8 Story...

A re-cap would be nice, but I probably need to lay out an entire program of restoration before committing to one small part. Please note that I am not in the league of most of the people on this board. I mostly use my gear for personal music enjoyment, remixing, archiving, transfers, etc. I have...
