Maybe the 246 marked a turning point in tascam's pre-amp design? I mentioned on thread in the digital recording forum how disappointed I am with the inputs of the Tascam digital recorders with regard to connecting dynamic microphones. It came as quite a shock after the great results plugging the...
I wonder if the 244 is a little different to the 246? The 244 service manual lists mic input impedance of 10k or less, and with my own 244s I find an ancient Shure Unidyne III (similar to the SM57 I think) and a modern Chord IM07 (cheap Shure copy) work really well. No need for a matching...
The Unidyne has an XLR plug at the end of the cable. I use an XLR to 1.4"TS cable for the 244. Using a DVM it measures up as 25 Ohms - not like measuring impedance I know, but still low. I bought a Chord IM07 the other day which measures up at 600 Ohms and behaves exactly the same way connected...
Thanks guys. Sorry about the DP008 typo - I was a bit tired last night! I have the same problem with a DP004 and a DP01FX - with any dynamic mic plugged into these there is a lot of hiss - about the same level as you get with a cassette deck running type I tape with no NR. The tonality is...
Thanks for this.. Good to know that you tried it too! That amp looks a great bit of kit but the price doubles on import to the UK. The level from the mic is on the low side but not bad. I am wondering if it is an impedance issue with the dp08 inputs and that a transformer may help?
This is probably going to sound like a really weird post - and I apologise in advance as it sort of falls between analogue and digital and I'm not sure where to post it!
I'd like to be able to use my Tascam US122 mkII USB interface sometimes on battery power and not plugged into the pc. This is...
Thanks for clearing this up. I've had a look at the info about that mic. I have to say that I don't like the sound of it as much as with the previous mic(s) she used. Myabe there is something wrong with my ears but there is a certain shrillness I think.
After testing again I've put the cap back on with the springclip and it is sounding great! Going to do some recording today to check it out for a longer time. Thanks so much for all your help Steenamaroo. This mic means a lot to me - it's been used for a number of albums and live gigs.
Hi Steenamaroo. I have just managed to get the top off using g your instructions. Thanks! Just a very small piece of fine cotton thread fell out. It seems to work fine with the head off. Anything I should check before putting it back? The diaphragm looks intact.
Thanks Steenamaroo. Yes there is another hole on the other side and the clip looks just as you describe. Going to try again when I get home later tonight!
Thanks Steenamaroo. I've tried to push those brass pins in and can't seem to budge them. I've used a small screwdriver with as much force as I dare. Is there some sort of trick I'm missing? I dare not use a hammer to tap them out surely.....
I'm having problems with my 60's Unidyne III again. I get a big drop in bass response. The only way to cure this is to pull the black plastic top end around the capsule away from the body slightly. It then sounds great but after a few minutes slips back. I wonder if there is a loose connection...
Thanks - that tube mic does look similar! If it is something like this she is using I'm surprised that the sound is more shrill than normal. I'd expect a bit more warmth from a tube!
Thanks also for the other pic - it is still a bit low res though at 400 x 225 - It is difficult to see much detail!
Thanks for all the replies. Maybe my ears are playing up. but listening to the new album her vocals don't sound quite the same. If anything there is a slight harshness. I'm wondering if this new mic (if it is real!) is the culprit? Does anyone have a high res photo they could share by any chance?
I saw a photo of Alison the other day in a UK newspaper - the Daily Telegraph. It was a studio shot with her beside a really classy looking microphone on a huge trolley and gantry. Unfortunately I don't have a copy. But what intrigues me is that the mic had two huge cables running from it. Dual...
My recent "wobbles" with a 244 were entirely eliminated by replacing the pinch roller. Maybe this could do the same with your 488? I think I'd try this before oiling anything. You could also check that the motor drive pulleys are clean - some of the old drive belt residue stuck to these can...
