    New mix

Thanks man. How's the new studio? Keeping you busy? Hope you get well soon. I'd like to take credit, but my son wrote and performed this. All I did was mix it, panned vocals and all:rolleyes: Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I may try un-panning the vocals just to see if it's better.

Put on your producer's hat for me.

Theramin, I knew it had a name. I also knew that I didn't know what others knew, that is knowing it's a theramin.

Put on your producer's hat for me.

I think you should keep the vocals in that part, and ditch the spaceship sound thingy. I think it would sound a lot better. I actually think the vocals sound good and the spaceship is making it sound hoakie.

    New mix

I dug another old one out from 2007 and spiffed it up a bit. Let me know what's good or bad. It's called Photographs. Here's the mix: https://www.box.com/shared/static/3e0yamfnituvli7uc4ow.mp3

I'll Play The Blues For You

I was going to make 4 observations, but I see they've already been made. 1) love the guitar tone 2) don't like the snare 3) great vocals but a little soft 4) sounds like Robert Cray I liked it a lot.

    Baby Steps

Thanks for that feedback. I do want them more in the background, so I'll try to tweak that. Paul, coming from you that means a lot. By the way, people here are loving your Pete Gardiner CD.

Glad to hear it, thank you. You're right. I listen to some old stuff I've mixed in the past and wonder "what were you thinking?".

    what order do you mix?

This is exactly what I do, and I do it in mono. Usually drums and vocals first. Vocals are usually the most important part of any song, so get them sounding good and sitting right with the drums first. Starting with the loudest and busiest part of the song gets the heavy lifting out of the...

    Question about volume level

Yellow is the new red for digital mixing. Absolutely no reason to push the meters even into the yellow. Just turn up your monitors if you want loud. Digital clipping does not sound good, so why risk it when there is absolutely nothing to gain by pushing levels to the limit. I generally aim...

    Old San Juan

By the way, I miss your old Mr. Clean avitar. The eye is freaking me out.

    Old San Juan

Holy Crap Batman, that was something else. Bob, you know I'm an aficionado of good acoustic guitar, and yours sound great. The electrics on the other hand sound sick (I assume they represent last nights storm). Outstanding work as usual.

    Baby Steps

Thanks, I'll check it out. Thanks for the feedback It's kind of funny, I've been told that the guitars are too dark and need to be brightened up a bit. You think just the opposite. Maybe that means they're just right??? I did put a high shelf cut on the guitars. I know what you mean about...

    Baby Steps

I guess it depends on the shaker. On these, I did nothing but a high pass filter at 580 Hz. Nothing else. One trick for finding a really irritating frequency is to duplicate the track, flip the phase on one of them so they cancel. Then put an eq on one of them with a boost somewhere and then...

    Windride (original)

I was just being self-deprecating in a lighthearted way. Your song is really well done. Thanks, that was above and beyond the call of duty.

    Windride (original)

I really like it, but songs like this remind me that I'm just a guitar zero, even though I really wish I was a guitar hero. Everything was really well done. Even the bass line makes me dizzy trying to imagine playing that fast.

Thanks Chili, hope it's finally cooling off down there in Texas. Bob, always good to hear from you. Hope all is well. Thanks for listening. That's nice of you to say that. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Baby Steps

Recorded this a long time ago, before discovering this forum, so I dug it up, added some things and re-mixed it. I thought I'd post it up to see how it's mixed. It's called baby steps, written for a couple who was struggling to have a child...

    where we go redux

You've managed to pull together some really interesting sounds into a very cohesive mix. I really like it. I like the vocals the way they are a bit distant and almost telephone like. Maybe they could come up a bit in parts where things get a bit busy, but I think they sound great. Love the...

Need help with a guitar sound

I think I get what you are saying about the strummed guitar part. I don't think it's the highs making it sound harsh, in fact it sounds kind of boomy, especially on the two beat. Seems like there is too much attack, which you could help with volume automation, or compress that part differently...
