I worked a while on this mix for the "Mix This" forum and posted a couple of weeks ago. Just trying to work on my mixing skills. I was hoping to get some feedback on the mix, but I must have been too late, and the thread seems dead (maybe I killed it?). The song is "Fraud" by The Jongleurs...
Yep, this is a good way to do it. Also, as noises get farther away, they lose high frequencies, so cutting some high end out will move it back as well. Another thing you can do is cut the "presence" frequency of the vocal somewhere typically between 3-5kHz to make it sit back further.
Strat nailed it. The guitars are nice. Since you asked specifically about vocal pitch, I think for the most part it's pretty good. There's two spots where the main vocal and the harmony seem to be clashing, and it's on the same word "back" at 1:50 and again at 2:40. The notes there are not...
Some good ideas. I have a djembe and a cajon, but not sure my skills are up to a song like this. I guess I could give it a shot. Nothing to lose really. I've many times considered just getting a snare drum and some brushes and maybe a kick and high hat, but not so sure I could even make that...
I think I understand what you're saying, and I think I agree, maybe ??? Just kidding. I hear what you're saying. I just got carried away on this one. I'll tone it down. I agree with you, if it sounds good, who cares whether it's impossible for a drummer with only two arms to play it?
Thanks for taking the time to listen. I worried it was way too busy. Now I know.
I'll send you a PM when I've had time to bounce down a version without the drums. Might not be until Sunday. Kind of busy weekend with lots of Christmas parties and food prep, etc.. Thanks for the offer.
Yes...
Greg, I guess I'm the one needing a slap in the face. I'm awake now. Thanks to you as well Duff. Honesty is what I came for, and you weren't afraid to spell it out. I'll start from scratch and get it right.
Thanks for the feedback. Funny that you mentioned brush train, because that's exactly what I wanted for this, but I have not been able to find any midi brush train samples until yesterday. I shelled out some bucks for a new pack, so I'll fiddle with it. A real drummer is out of the question...
Sounds awfully good to me here on my monitors. It sounds like everything was well recorded. It's mixed well, and I'm not hearing anything that is screaming for eq. The vocals sound really good to me. Good instrument spread. Very nicely done.
I know everyone hates the sound of fake drums, but some of us have no choice. Here's my first attempt at adding midi drums to a song. Be brutally honest about what's good and what's not. To all you drummers out there. What would make it sound better? Thanks in advance...
Welcome bud. I like your mix. One thing I notice is a lot of string noise coming from your bass track in places, especially in the bass intro. Maybe from lots of compression? Other than that, no gripes. Everything seems nicely balanced. I can only listen on headphones right now, so I'll...
I have two avedis ma5 pre-amps, and never cease to be amazed how good they sound on everything. Acoustic guitars are crisp and clear. Electric guitars sound rich and gooey. Vocals have a nice full warm tone. If I had to pick only one pre-amp to record everything, the ma5 would be it.
Here's mix 2, which likely is my final mix. I changed a few things, and tidied up a few levels.

As always, feedback is welcome.
Don't really have any secrets. Just tried to mix it with some punch, and keep it balanced. The kick and snare were replaced with Slate trigger. Lots of volume automation everywhere. Tuned the vocals. Parallel drum compression to taste. Some panning, eq, delays and saturation, as well as...

I'm perfectly happy with the sonic quality of 320 mp3 files for the purposes of this forum.
I guess I'm a little late to the party, but here's my mix.

Thanks to the OP for posting. Very fun song to mix. Nicely recorded.
I actually think the reverb on the guitar is better now, more subtle but still spacious. That's the biggest difference I notice. The control of the dynamics seems better than I remember as well, especially on the strummed guitar parts. It's been so long since I first listened to this one, but...
