    New Electronics for Strat.

By the way, Lt. Bob, I wasn't knocking your recommendation, just looking for all the opinions I can find. Not to hijack the thread, but I'm trying to decide on a set myself and I had a couple of related questions 1) Are the overwounds more prone to hum issues? 2) If I get the hot bridge...

    New Electronics for Strat.

This place appears to carry the Fender switches, too, along with some other interesting stuff. Do post your opinions of those pickups when you get them; I'm considering doing a similar electronics overhaul on my old Peavey strat copy.

    Strange popping on pick

It sounds to me like the string is hitting the pickup -- press the string down until it hits the polepiece and see if you get the same sound. Mostly you just need to back that pickup off away from the strings a little. Hopefully you don't have a busted mounting bracket from that kick.

    GFS Humbuckers

I put a couple of the Dream 180's in a semi-hollow thing I built last year. It's the one that comes stock in their hollowed-out strat-shaped guitars. Though I'll confess to buying them because they were pretty, I've been very happy with the variety of sounds I'm getting from them. I'm...

    The Ultimate Set Up.

Back in high school, I recall playing a strat copy, permanently on bridge pickup, through a peavey rage 158 run through the line out into an old borrowed Kustom 2x15 tuck-n-roll amp. Every chord sounded like a circular saw cutting into thick plywood. And I believe our "vocal PA" was just a...

    On "Expert" Advise

This is just the nature of having finite brain space. Most of us only have enough time to explore a few subjects with any depth. I believe a cowboy would be one who knows a little about a little and thinks he knows everything about everything. +1,000,000 on this.

For any one who makes their own effects...

I've wondered about the same thing. I thought Radio Shack used to sell little metal boxes for projects, but I don't know how strong they are. I'd certainly be tempted to just make a little plywood box. You might also use one of these things, and just use a plywood cover on the other side...

How To, or Who Can, ID a Humbucker Pup with NO Markings On It?

Fair enough. I'm guessing it's just some generic thing. You know the test, though -- if it sounds good, keep it. It'd be easy enough to make a little cardboard mount that holds the pickup above the strings, upside-down, to test it out.

How To, or Who Can, ID a Humbucker Pup with NO Markings On It?

Huh. 5.2 seems kinda low for a humbucker. I wonder if it's fake and really just a single-coil inside. I have a couple like that on a cheapo. Does it sound any good?

    Loose tuner

Oh, like a hex bushing on the front. I'd just put a teensy bit of carpenter's glue on the threads before tightening. That should hold it in place, but it won't keep you from breaking it loose later if you need to. The only case where I could foresee a problem is if tension on this screw is...

    Loose tuner

What screw part are you talking about? The actual worm gear that does the tuning, the little screws that hold it to the headstock, or the bushing on the front? If it's the first one, I'd probably just get a new tuner, especially if it's an easy one to match or you don't care if it does. I...

    Questions about single coil noise

Seems like somebody was just asking about this the other day. Maybe this is the thread I'm thinking of. As I recall, the consensus was that you'd have better luck with a good shielding job than with a noise gate.

    WTF is WRONG With Me??

That's my vote. There was a guy up here advertising an epi les paul for 50 bucks yesterday. And it was nice looking. I thought about calling, but I figured (a) it's stolen, (b) it's being sold out from under somebody by their pissed-off significant other, or (c) this guy's just going to try...

    pickup question

Huh, I figured somebody would have replied by now. I'm no expert, but to determine if your middle pickup has reversed (magnetic) polarity, you might try this. I've never seen a guitar where all the grounds weren't connected. I'd connect them all to the sleeve.

    new guitar fret buzz

I'd just raise the bridge a little bit before I did anything else. Shouldn't take that much.

    DIY Rack:

_Cold_. I put up some Christmas decorations this morning and had to keep going back in to un-numb my hands. Nothing too bad precipitation-wise, though. I think you're getting more of the storm than we are. We're just getting a little bit of snow this afternoon, so nothing really on the...

    DIY Rack:

This looks classy; just stain it to match that desk, throw on a coat of poly, and you'll be all set. I can understand why you'd wait, though, if it's getting as cold there as it is here. So the gear's just screwed to the wood, right? Oh, and the lava lamp's a nice touch.

    Children's Echo Mic

I think I'd just drill a hole in the bottom and clip a little radio-shack lapel mic in there. You could maybe also get some neat sounds mounting a little piezo transducer on the diaphragm in there.

    bass rattle please help!

I had a rattling truss rod like that on my SG copy. For years I thought it was the tuners, and holding the tuners would make it stop, but only because it put a little extra tension on the neck, I guess. I put a little tension on the truss rod and it disappeared. It didn't take much, maybe 1/8...

Getting Excited About An Old Kay SG-Style Electric Bass

I'm always happy to see a refurb project, man, especially one done on the cheap. I just didn't have the information you were looking for. And post pictures when you get it in working order; it sounds pretty cool.
