    Making a Gibson SG Clone

Yeah, ok. Looking forward to the progress pics, then.

    Making a Gibson SG Clone

Cool project. I like SGs. You're carving the neck and headstock out of a single piece of wood? Seems like you get a lot of shortgrain in the headstock that way. It was my understanding that a properly done scarf joint would actually be stronger.

Mini humbucker conversion for full sized routs

Looks good to me, and it seems to be working. That's what matters, right? Good to hear you've got it sounding the way you want; it would be a shame to let an instrument like that sit around collecting dust. If you'd upgrade that utility knife to a $7 coping saw, you could also just make some...

I did it. My new amp lives!!!

Awesome. Bet it sounds that much better knowing you built it yourself, too. Is this your first amp build or just the first one in this category? Building an amp is on my long-term list of things to do, but it'll be a long time before I get there. Pics? Recordings?

    Argh!

Is it just the one string? I hate to suggest the obvious, but it could just be the string. Bad strings do wacky stuff. Try another one if you haven't already.

    pseudo bass guitar?

For recording, I've been playing bass through guitar amps for years, and it sounds fine. Just don't turn it up too loud as you'll risk blowing the speaker. I've recorded a few things direct, and it sounds ok if the bassline's not too prominent anyway. Something like slap, with a wide dynamic...

    pseudo bass guitar?

This topic comes up periodically around here; usually the consensus is that you can buy a cheapo bass (pawnshops, craigslist) for around the same price as a good pedal, and it will still sound better. Is the issue space, or just cost? Also, is this for a recording or a live setup? Back in the...

    Potentiometer value question for guitar

Hey, long time no see. +1 on the 500K for brightness, especially if you're using the humbucker-sized ones with the metal covers. What kind of P90's are you putting in?

My Old, 60's MIJ Telestar Has THREE Pickup Wires- Whaaa???? Other Questions, Too.

I'd go ahead and replace them while the soldering iron's hot. A pack of two is what, 50 cents?

My Old, 60's MIJ Telestar Has THREE Pickup Wires- Whaaa???? Other Questions, Too.

If the pickups have metal covers, I'm guessing the second ground is the shield; it goes to the cover. I believe they wire it this way so you can switch the phase of the pickup without making the cover hot. So you could maybe put in a phase switch. From what I read, the orange drops just take...

    Score? I'm not sure.

You paid nothing for it = score. Even if it's unusable as a guitar, you can use the parts for bizarro projects and so forth. I think I'd take it apart to make sure there isn't water inside of it someplace.

    Pickguard for Epi ES-175

Are the epi guards the same as the Gibsons? Would these work?

    upgrades for epi sg jr

I'm just repeating something I've seen here (and elsewhere) many times, but if you have one or two strings going out of tune, it seems like the culprit is usually the nut, not the tuners. Does the string go flat after you do bends? I'd certainly check into that before springing for a new set...

    New pickup day!

I got a gift cert to guitarfetish over the holidays, so I finally broke down and replaced the old foambuckers in my cheapo SG copy. I put a Mean 90 in the bridge and a Dream 90 in the neck, and I went ahead and replaced all the pots and lined the cavities with copper foil. I've been wanting...

    It's allliiiiivve! (Warning, large images)

Excellent, man. Glad you got this to work out. I like the two separate outputs; I bet you could make some good sounds with the guitar distorted and the bass clean.

    Direct recording an amp

My experiences recording through the line out of an amp have usually sounded about like a circular saw cutting into plywood. Earsplitting, awful stuff. The signal coming from the amp is made to sound good through the speaker and it just doesn't translate well direct. I have a feeling what you...

    Interference in a pickup

Would the shielding still be an issue on a humbucker? I thought that was kind of the point, that interference coming from outside the coils would cancel out.

HELP - Precision Bass has developed a warped neck

Muttley, I was the first person to suggest adjusting the truss rod, but you said in another post that doing so could permanently damage the instrument if you're not careful. What happens? Is it just people cranking it too hard and breaking it the rod, or are there other issues that can arise...

HELP - Precision Bass has developed a warped neck

I don't think that's normal from string tension. I've had mine in the case for a couple of years at the time, and it has always come out playable. My guess is there's been a major temperature or humidity change in the environment since you last played it. It is my understanding that that's...

Looking to get into guitar modding.

Good to see you're working on this. I don't know if totally uninsulated wire will work; I normally see wire with a thin coating of enamel or something like that. That may be what you've got, though; I don't know how different it looks. The point is the windings need to function as a coil, not...
