I have the Presonus Digimax 96k. Not sure if it's the same pres but I think they are ok. What you would expect from mid-level pres, nothing special. Not my first choice for pres but good enough for my second eight channels. I don't use the conversion in the unit though, I use the direct outs...
Well I think it's pretty much relative to what you can afford. I used a Multiface for quite a few years and was happy with it. I then bought a fireface to replace it and thought it sounded just as good, and a few weeks later bought a Lucid 8824 to add 8 more channels to it. Comparing the Lucid...
Buy a "decent" set of converters and record @ 24 bit 44.1. Your cpu will work better, you can pile on the plug-ins and you'll have plenty of hard drive space.
There's no advantage to buying cheap conversion that does 96 or 192 when the better converters sound much nicer @ 44.1. I've already...
Honestly, I'm more than happy with my lowly Lucid converters @ 44.1.
Here's some good reading :)

I had several pairs of Naiants and yes they are decent mics. Something about them I didn't like on overheads though. Could be I have a very low ceiling but I do have treatment on it. I have a totally different opinion though about the M177's vs the Naiants. To me they were much better on...
I use a pair of CAD M177's. They should be in your budget. I have no complaints, they seem to cut down on the harshness of the cymbals better than anything else I've tried.
I have the Cad M179 and use a pair of them for drum overheads with great success. If you are looking for an all-around condenser I would go with a SP B1 though. Better on vocals and acoustic guitars, amps IMHO
Honestly, you're not going to be doing anything phenominal on that Fostex, so not knowing what your budget actually is I would say just go with some shure sm57's for now and have some fun!
In that price range CAD M177 is working great on overheads for me.
SP B1 is a great mic if you're looking for a condenser.
Dynamic, I'll take a Heil PR20 over a sm57 or sm58 for $150. Better mic IMHO
+1 for the Agile guitars. You won't find anything close for the price they are. I love mine, wouldn't hesitate to use it as my main guitar, in fact i do sometimes.
Did the seller give you any kind of warranty? If not, it's unfortunate but I would have to say you are out of luck. Especially if you say you powered it on previously and even put signal through it with no problem. When you buy things off ebay you are taking risk. If you wanted a warranty you...
If I was looking for an Ibanez I would try to find an older s500 series Ibanez. Those are the ones that feel the best to me. I never played an RG that I liked. Personal preference maybe.
