AKG D4 as upgrade choice to D770/SM57

Who knows? You'll just have to try one out.

    Cheaper alternative to Shure SM7 / EV RE20 ?

Heck, a 58 with the transformer should be alright too. I pretty much hate 58s for stage use... but for recording they can do quite well.

Whats up with the replacement ribbons? Do we need to request those?

Valve mic too sensitive for home studio!

Yup, unless you have a great sounding room or an extremely dead room.

Valve mic too sensitive for home studio!

Back up the cart... so how far are you from the mic typically when you record? If you are too far away, all you are going to get is room sound. Try like 4 inches from the mic.

He could also have his gain staging sideways and maybe he is just bringing up his noise floor a ton? I love my SM7. That said, what is it exactly we are recording? Vocals? Guitars? Dish washers? Light brites? That makes a big difference in what you want to get.

    Large Diaphram Condensors for Overheads

Sorry, yes, recorderman... Mixerman is a whole other douchey thing.

    Large Diaphram Condensors for Overheads

In my ever so humble opinion... I sort of hate 414s for drum over heads. So don't feel like you are missing out. My absolute favorite drum OHs are a pair of AT4050s. <tanget> Don't get rid of your SDCs though. What I usually do is use the AT4050s in a spaced pair (think mixerman) and then put...

    Presonus ADL 600 preamp

It is pretty much awesome.... Sounds great, not as tubby as an UA610 design... great pre. It wouldn;t be my first choice meat and potatoes pre... but it will serve you well.

    AT4050 vs MSH-1's

Err, whatever happened to matching the proper mic to the proper source? I have both the MSHs and a pair of 4050s... they both get used all the time, sound great... but just have different sources they shine on.

Me too. I unscrewed the clamps and as I pulled the brace off, the ribbon was literally stuck to it and just disintegrated.

    Universal Audio 2-610

I have an LA610 and love the thing... but as some have mentioned, it is not my go to pre. I use a UA4110 for most tasks and the LA610 for things that need some syrup and/or nuts added. I find it especially good on certain guitar sounds and for male vocals. Well, the LA610 with an SM7 is pretty...

Drum micing - How do you get your tom sound

I have three overheads... I use a modified Mixerman set up. AT4050s for the L/R OHs and an SM81 for a center OH. It takes forever to measure this out so that the phase is right and the center is in the center... but I find I get a great image. Then I have a D6 on kick, i5 on rack toms and snare...

Is this wrong? (ordering a U87 to try out)

Indeed. I thought he did too. If you just want to mess with one, well, too bad. I don't get to test drive Ferraris just because.

Is this wrong? (ordering a U87 to try out)

I do this sort of thing all the time. I have a rep I use at Sweetwater, he puts the stuff on my credit card, try it out, and send back what I don't want. Just be straight up with your sales guy as to your intentions and you should be fine.

    RECORDERMAN´s method with Omnis?

You could also baffle/gobo the omnis... that will take the room out of the picture more.

Live vocal mic upgrade (from 58) recommendation?

I am an Audix fan myself. The OM5 is my work horse mic for live stuff. Not "full sounding" as in boomy as it has a controlled proximity effect, but it is very articulate. A year or so back I was shopping for a new mic for my girlfriend at the time. She is/was really a quite excellent vocalist...
