    Condencer mic under $600

I knew what you meant... I was just reinforcing it. :) I hate 414s personally... I am an AT4050 man myself.... Bud versus Coors. ;)

    Vocal mike poll

The Antares Mic Modeler is no longer being sold so there will be no future refinements.

    Vocal mike poll

How does the analogy work? A mic has a characteristic sound and adding EQ will change that sound... You can't add what isn't there. You can't polish a turd. You can't make something what it isn't. A pinto and a corvette both have spark plugs and fan belts.... they both more or less do the same...

    Microphone Isolation & Acoustic Treatment

I don't know if I would go that far... for some mid and high end flutter echo knock down, they have some value. For bass trapping they won't do a thing. For instance if you have a room that is too reflective, hanging a duvet in front of the mic (usually behind the performer to keep reflections...

Huh? And chocolate cake can emulate french fries by adding ketchup...

    Microphone Isolation & Acoustic Treatment

Duvet is the same thing as the word comforter.... a big fluffy warm ass blankie. Or as Webster's says: "a thick bed covering made of two layers of cloth containing a filling (such as down)"

    Condencer mic under $600

And there is a reason for it... those are the can't lose work horses of the world. But why be hung up on getting a condensor specifically? An SM7, RE20, or MD421 might be just the thing for you. I can't say enough good things about my SM7. Few things don't work well on it and sit well in a...

Do you really need expensive stuff?

I think some cheap equipment is crap... and some good equipment is better... and some better equipment is less than adequate.... but better than crap... Though if it is better, sometimes you have less...Though some equipment is better than none... unless it is really crappy... then none is...

    power amp and clipping?

Ok, so it is indeed a power amp, not a powered mixer... usually you want to run a power amp wide open... set that dude to 0 and go. You aren't adjusting the volume... you are padding the input. Run the power amp wide open and back down the output of your mixer instead for maximum benefit. You...

    power amp and clipping?

Eeesh... yeah, be careful. Slight flashes from time to time are okay... but you don't want a lot of them as you are going to get some big ass bass transients through and burn up a coil. (Personally, I strive to never clip ever) Also, just to be 100 certain, are we sure we are talking about...

    Drum Overheads...

I would say a pair of condensors (be it large or small diaphragm) would be the overwhelming choice of most folks. I personally like an LDC for overheads. There are 100 options out there in that price range... Studio Projects, Rode, Oktava, Samson..... With SDCs especially, you can find pretty...

Mr Trankley has an equally well suited and acoustically treated room there too it seems to hear all this magic in.

    Mic cables

Snap, who the hell recorded this stuff to begin with? I mean, the source material (and the $2 DAC in your CD player) must be pretty damn great for the cables to be the last barrier to all these benefits.

    cheap ribbon mic

If you are recording guitar amps, drums, etc., I wouldn't worry about this at all. Finger picked acoustic guitar, perhaps. I personally am dying to get my hands on the group buy ribbons to start tweaking transformers. I have a feeling the lollipop ribbons from Chance's buy are nearly identical...

    Sharp Mic

Yup, many of what Chessrock suggested are all "sharp" mics... and they sit in a mix like finger nails on a chalk board IMO. I think people are taking sharp to mean bright and I wonder if that is what you really mean and want. I might suggest a more balanced mic like an AT4040 (look used and...
