Clues I can give you. Direct information? no.
Some real advise I can give is that I prefer to build point to point now days. If you're going to etch your own circuit boards, then you need to pay attention to how the traces are laid out. Remember, this is a high impedance circuit. There are also...
You can do the "Royer mod" to a V67G and it works quite well. I did a couple the way David described in his article and since then I've learned enough to say what the weaknesses are and what can be improved on. There's quite a few things. Namely David picked the wrong transformer and used easy...
The amount of Mogami wire in a V67 is about two inches max in the signal path. Anyone who thinks that about of wire is going to make a difference need to see me about buying the Golden Gate bridge, because I'm selling it.
And this thread is old.
Wouldn't it stand to reason that since the company name is sE, not Se, or SE, that they would change the engraving to match the company name?
Well, yes. Quite a lot has changed since I started that project. I've had 3 different versions of that mic with various tubes and capsules and I think I'm close to picking the best. I also acquired 2 Soundelux e47s, which are about as close in sound to a real U47 out there and in my comparisons...
Lately my favorites have been CAD e70 (also known as Superlux S241) VERY un-hyped top end, pad, roll off, good response and very smooth.
Worth every penny or more!
Have you tried it on acoustic guitar?
How does it SOUND?
There's no law that says you MUST use SDC's on acoustic guitar. People use all kinds of LDC's with great results. Every hear acoustic guitar with a C12, U87 or U47? AKG414? Those mics all do a fantastic job.
Well, given the choice between your friend's reply vs. Harvey Gearst's opinion I think your friends reply should be considered null and void.
But then again, I don't know who your friend is.
The only thing I think changing the FET would benefit is noise, and I believe there's some dissent on that based on the circuit. I also believe the SK170 is what's in there already.
The capacitors will have the biggest effect on sound outside of any mechanical alterations. Better film...
About the only thing you'd be able to do with it is upgrade the capacitors, maybe replace the transducer (capsule). The capsule is a 797 copy of a K67 Neumann, which is used in the U67 and U87, but the diaphragm is 3 microns thin instead of the 6 microns used by Neumann.
The Behringer B-1 doesn't have the greatest reputation, even though its made by 797 it doesn't seem to stand up to other 797 mics. The Studio Projects B-1 on the other hand has a great reputation, not only as a vocal mic, but a general work horse mic as well.
As mentioned, the MXL V67G has a...
I do them all myself. Its been a real obsession of late. Actually for the past 5 years. Aiming at perfection and getting darn closer with each one.
For some mics I've progressed beyond 'mods' and have started building my own circuits, at least on the tube side of things.
very nice and all, but seriously, with the amount of time building it vs. what you get - I'd have shelled out the $30 for a shock mount. Actually, I've paid half that for shock mounts on eBay. There's some silver ones that are exactly the same as on the picture at the top of your site for $15...
