    Mackie DFX6

Dave, congrats! The DFX6 is a nice little board. I'm a Mackie fan as well. I have an older (analog) Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro that I will not soon part with. While I don't use it as much as other equip I own, I find that when I need that certain "analog" sound it is there for me. I've used it for...

    Need New Head phones..

I use Audio Technica ATH-M50 phones for tracking and for testing mixes. I don't think I could find a better set of cans for these particular applications. Since I only have a small home studio, I really can't comment on how they would work for professional talent in a real recording...

    Cubase LE

Cubase LE came with my Olympus LS-10. I have installed the software and have continued to play with it but it seems to be pretty complicated.... at least for this novice. Everything I've read indicates that LE is a fairly complete package but, to use it to its fullest extent, there is a bit of...

Ryan, speaking from experience, you can spend some serious $'s on sound cards, monitors, mixers, recording software, mics, .....etc., etc. Getting a good reference book on the home recording is a great idea. After acquiring all the above equip. over the past few years, (which I still enjoy...

Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro Mixer with a Portable Digital Recorder

This is probably a really dumb question, but is it possible to connect a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro mixer to the line-in on a Portable Digital recorder like a Zoom H2 or Olympus LS-10? I doubt I would want use external mics very often, but I have a couple of decent condenser mics that require phantom...

    AT4040 For Hip Hop Vocals

I'm an old fart and I'm not into hip hop (mainly 60's rock and folk) but, for vocals and recording acoustic guitar, the AT 4040 is a decent LD condenser mic. I've also used a it for recording from amp as well and it did a much better job than I would have expected. It's a fairly versatile mic...

    Quiet Clean Mixer

I've got a 1202 VLZ Pro that more than meets my needs. The pres are good and EQ is precise, although sliders would be nice. I/O options are pretty standard for a mixer of this type and size. It's given me additional flexibility in my little home studio. I would recommend you consider a Mackie.

Pre Amps in Mackie 1604 series

I have Mackie 1202 VLZ-Pro and an Echo AudioFire8 audio interface. When it come to basic home recording, the preamps in both units more than meet my needs and expectations. I'm sure there are better interfaces and mixers out there, but for for my needs and the level of recording that I'm...

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

StackableMusic, With regard to your question on calibrating the sub, I did a lot of experimenting with my RP 10 before I got it close to what sounded decent on the final mix and I'm still tweaking a bit. My studio (small 12' X 13' bedroom) is only mildly treated with regard to bass traps. I...

    headphones: ATH-M20 & ATH-D40 vs Sony MDR-7506 vs Samson CH700

I recently bought the new Audio Technica ATM 50 and I'm pleased with their flat response...to my ear, none of the frequencies seems to be too hyped. I probably will stick to my monitors for mixing but, the 50's will definately be used for recording and playback.

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

Please keep in mind that I'm a rookie at mixing and home recording in general so, my response should be discounted as such. I have KRK RP 5's and use a KRK RP 10S sub. Even though your Event TR 5's are likely a step (or two) above my RP 5's, I'm sure the deficiencies in the lower frequencies...
