A little latency and vst instrument problem.

To clarify, there is no such thing as a "low latency MIDI interface". The latency you experience is an audio interface issue. And it's not as simple as getting a new interface. There are lots of things to contribute and not the least of which would be the chipset on your motherboard. I'd say...

Whats a great DAW software for recording?

Nothing. What's "better" is a personal choice and depends on a person's level of comfort with a given environment, workflow, needs, etc, etc. Logic, thanks to its Envornment (not environment, in general sense, but the patching/attributes editing, etc thing that Logic calls Environment) makes it...

Whats a great DAW software for recording?

If you're making dogmatic statements like that, maybe YOU should rethink your career options? Maybe become a priest?

    Dealing With Too Many Samples

I wouldn't record them all separately. I'd probably stick a mic in front of them, maybe put them in different rooms if bleed was an issue, and record the whole mess in one go. Then punch out/punch in issues. Having said that, obviously now we're stuck with separately recorded takes, that are...

A little latency and vst instrument problem.

Another thing. Are you having issues only with Cubase 5 + Kontakt? Have you tried Kontakt as a standalone? What about Cubase with other VSTs? Like I said though, 18ms latency is a lot when buffer size is 512. I doubt that would be caused by MIDI issues, as ASIO and MIDI are (supposed to be)...

A little latency and vst instrument problem.

Just to be sure, are we talking about full Kontakt or Kontakt Player? If it is full Kontakt, please double check the version info. I think you mean 4.0.5. Version 4.1 just came out on June 1st.

A little latency and vst instrument problem.

Hmmm. 18ms latency with buffer size set to 512 is definitely on the high side. On my Aardvark Pro Q-10, 512 buffer setting gives me around 5-6ms latency at 48kHz and around 7ms at 44.1kHz. What sample-rate are you using? I'd see if there are driver updates for the Toneport. From your specs, I...

Need tips for home studio gear for $5,000

Just because you can get a $500 PC doesn't mean Macs are very expensive. Especially when considering build quality and the specs. The PC I built myself cost $2,500. I could've easily made it cost half the price, but the quality of the components was as important to me as their spec sheets.

Need tips for home studio gear for $5,000

Yes, but it also comes with some killer instruments and FX, so the price is more than justified. The synths and the included sampler alone are worth it.

Need tips for home studio gear for $5,000

If he is mostly going to be dealing with audio only, and little (if any) MIDI stuff then Pro Tools might be a more faster/streamlined environment UI for him. However, he'll be locked in as far as audio interface choices are concerned to either M-Audio or Digidesign stuff, which IMO are not the...

    sweetwater creation station computers

That maybe. However, the complication comes from choosing the components themselves, and choosing wisely here is quite important when dealing with audio. Although I've built all my music computers myself, and will continue to do so, I totally get Walter Tore and why he doesn't want to bother...

    Bass in Cubase

Halion One is OK, but is definitely limited. It's the little brother of the full blown Halion sampler from Steinberg. Personally I just Kontakt, and feel that it is probably by far the most comprehensive and feature rich sampler out on the market at the moment. However, depending on how deep you...

Dealing With Volume Spikes In The Recorded Waveform

Fair points Dr. Varney, and sorry for the assumptions :) If there are certain words and/or syllables that stick out, as Chibi Nappa pointed out, one of the best ways to deal with these is good old volume automation. Also, compression in some cases may not even be the right tool for the job. For...

Dealing With Volume Spikes In The Recorded Waveform

Dr. Varney. I think you're getting way to microscopic here. I wonder if you'd try to get this level had you been working with tape and an analog console ;) In the end, by trying to "tame" each transient into some homogenic level that looks nice and orderly on the screen is likely to do you...

doubling/hard panning a mono ac. guitar

There are times where the only way you can achieve what you want to achieve is through audio manipulation within the DAW or some other medium (samplers, cutting up tapes, reversing them, etc). This is where you start venturing into more sound design than mixing in it's widely understood and...

    What size is yours??

I am going to stick to mine for now until I can afford to upgrade my soundcard and UAD-1 with UAD2. My soundcard's manufacturer no longer exists so no drivers for anything other than XP SP2, and I don't want to spend money on anything less than those RME jobbies. Also, it is becoming more and...

Are the Mackie HR824's now made in China?

    What size is yours??

With hardware synths, I've gotten into a habit of leading the synth parts with 1 - 2 bar "setup" section where I record nothing but MIDI messages, such as Bank/Patch select, initial MIDI CC settings and such. Depending on the hardware synth this may work rather well especially if it's something...

Recommended dB levels for each instrument in the mixer before mastering?

Not for individual tracks. That would be specific to a given mix. But you want to leave some headroom in the overall mix for the mastering process.
