    Mixing with Logics Drummer.

Welcome to mixing. The principal objective is to get the right balance of the instruments at every moment in the song. It's not easy. It's good that you are looking for headroom right from the start. You could even be mixing at lower levels. . You'll need to calibrate your ears and your...

Reverb and Mixing advice on vocals for Van Diemens Land cover by U2 needed

I wasn't familiar with the tune, the only examples I can find are recorded live. In those the reverb is produced primarily by the venue/room (and then whatever the mix engineer did with it). If that's what you're after, you're going to want to simulate that space. There is a very good article...

    My First Ambient/Stadium Rock Attempt--Feedback?

Ambient Stadium Rock? Hmmm... is that what Coldplay is? It sounds more more ambient to me, and I definitely hear at as a film score. I kept waiting for some big drums and soaring guitars, but I don't have the context of what's on the screen at the time in the film. I think the mix sounds...

    SoulPedal

I met this guy and his team at a local Guitar Fest a few months back and thought what they are trying to do is pretty cool. I was going to post about it then, but thought I'd wait until they launch. Well, that time is near... SoulPedal is basically a wah pedal in your shoe (but wait, there's...

Few Basic Questions About Logic Pro X

Probably not much help here, but - 1) Not sure what's going except the obvious, that there's a file, maybe a sample or something that Logic is expecting to load for your project and can't find it. I'm not going try to tell you where all that stuff is supposed to be, because I don't know. But...

Need recommendation for budget USB interface

Those interfaces really are the entry level for a decent box with real preamps. I have the Focusrite and it works great for me. I have never used a xlr/USB adapter but I would be leery of using one for music. You don't want to spend a lot of money, but you might be throwing away $30 when $120...

Matching recording level of one song to another

You could try a Gain plug-in on the channel with your track. Make any course adjustment on the plug in and use the channel fader and your ears while you a/b with the reference track. Then bounce your track. J

How do professional songwriters translate their written vocals to the clients?

I read somewhere that "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" wasn't intended to be a duet, but Tom Petty as the songwriter and producer started singing it to show Stevie Nicks what he wanted, and they were rolling tape, and the rest is, well... So watch out for your song becoming a duet. :o J

Easiest method of mixing software-generated drum tracks

I use Logic's Drummer to create patterns, it seems so much easier than step editing plus you can always convert the track to midi and edit it. I do acknowledge that the included virtual drummers don't cover very many genres. But what I really wanted to point out is that if you choose a...

Looking for Recommendations - Digital Piano/Synth for Recording

If you just want to use the keyboard for recording, you could get a midi keyboard controller, connect straight to your computer via USB, and use software synths and samples. A lot less expensive than a keyboard that generates it's own tones, just depends on how many keys and other knobs and...

So I thought why the hell not?

I like it. I would like to hear the lead vocal more out front when all the guitars are going. I like the effects on the vocals and use of the stereo field, maybe bring a drier vocal track up in the center of the mix. J

Is this blues, or is this just s4it? my playing

That's definitely a blues shuffle. You could try different and more definite turnaround licks to add variation. There's plenty of stock licks - google "blues turnarounds".

New Wave/Dream style song, looking for advice on mixing and mastering!

If you want the vocals to sound like that, I think you're going to have to make room for them with EQ cuts on the other instruments. Also reverb on the instruments to push them back and less on the vocals to bring them forward.

    Are instrumentals 'songs'?

After checking a few dictionary sites, and in the context of this forum, a song is a piece of music that is intended to be sung. An instrumental could be a song if an instrument simulates the part intended to be sung. I didn't find any definition that refers to any particular structure. J
