    Help me rent a collection

I live in Toronto, and am fortunate enough to have some good rental stores where I can get most mics. Despite renting, I only want to rent two high end mics for this job, and they will be used for vocal and guitar. 1: I need a good guitar mic. I will be miking a large cabinet with 2 12"...

Which software is the de facto industry standard for artists/recorders?

Without wanting to get involved in politics, the brand name behringer does not automatically make something bad. The ADA-8000 has been getting excellent reviews from all over the spectrum. If you really are anti-behringer though, and you still want a protools competetive system, there are...

How badly do grill dents affect sound.

I have never really thought about this too much, although, I've used quite a few dinged 58's with little discernable difference from a mint condition one. Without actually knowing the answer to your question, I would take a dinged grille, but only if I was getting a significant discount over the...

Which software is the de facto industry standard for artists/recorders?

Hard2Hear, for $1300 you can also get an RME 9652, A Behringer ADA-8000, cubase, and have enough spare change left over for a cheapie microphone. That's a full professional 8 input system, 8 pre's, and an input device for $1300. For another $400, you can turn it into a 24 input system with 24...

    New setup

I should have specified, RME HDSP 9652. This gives you 26 digital inputs, and 26 digital outputs. The Behringer ADA-8000's give you 8 preamps, 8 A/D converters, and 8 D/A converters (8 analog inputs and outputs). Total cost under $700 if you shop around on ebay -- under $750 with free shipping...

    New setup

If you live in the US, the killer budget combo is the RME HDSP (around $500) + a Behringer ADA-8000 (around $200) + a good $300 microphone. This combo is so ridiculously cheap to expand that it's a really good place to start, and in my experience, the RME is the best soundcard ever, bar none.

    Cheap A/D/A converter?

Is there a sub-$50 spdif to analog converter on the market? I need it for some pretty utilitarian purposes and I'm not terribly concerned about its fidelity.

Mic for female w/ harsh vox

I like to use dynamics on harsh voices as well. If you've got a 58 kicking around, try it. I was having really good results on a very harsh male voice with an Audio-Technica mic, but I've forgotten the model.. Singer brought it with him.

    Recommended Backup hardware?

Actually, assuming DVD-R's are anything like CD-R's, they have an expected shelf life of 20-30 years. That wasn't the original point, but don't expect to be reading those DVD-R's 50 years down the road.

are you building a new DAW? maybe consider this

The audio will still suck. My current mainboard audio card is capable of 44.1K/16b, but it's sound quality fails even to rival a $20 cd player. Current hardware will not be able to take advantage of PCI-X, so if you are holding off for the purpose of getting "something better" for audio...

Which software is the de facto industry standard for artists/recorders?

Because it's the defacto standard. Digidesign software is tied to digidesign hardware, and they have no reason to make it work with anything else They are the defacto standard. If you want the standard, pay the money. My money is on Cubase/Nuendo (depending on your exact needs)

IS PRE AMP NECESSARY AND XLR VS 1/4"

hi-Z signals are always unbalanced. They can be derived from balanced signals, but no 2 conductor connector carries a balanced signal. The difference between a shure 58 plugged into a hi-Z cable vs. a lo-Z cable is dependant primary on cable length, but the lo-Z also lowers the signal level fed...

    vocals are quiet?

REALLY QUIET sounds like BAD MIC or BAD CABLE. To eliminate the problem being the pre, plug it into another channel. Next, eliminate the cable (try another cable) If it still doesn't go, bring it into your local shop for repair. They can probably plug it into a tester as well as into a P.A...

    Mic saftey is everyone's responsiblity

Doing noticable harm to your mic would likely take much higher SPL's than your amplifier provides. The biggest enemy of the condenser is moisture, which is why I have stopped washing my mic's in the bathtub.

IS PRE AMP NECESSARY AND XLR VS 1/4"

Yes. Mic's with built in 1/4" connectors are not balanced. That means that the microphone cable picks up electronic hum and noise as the signal travels to your recording device. Almost all mic's require pre-amps. If your mixer has a small "gain" knob as well as a volume or level control, it...
